Idaho home to outstanding nuclear research
I had the opportunity recently to join with fellow Idaho Senator Jim Risch in honoring Idaho National Laboratory (INL) researchers Dr.Terry Todd and Dr. Mark DeHart, who were recently recognized as Fellows by the American Nuclear Society. Senator Risch and I submitted a Congressional Record Statement acknowledging this achievement in the official record of the U.S. Senate. Their accomplishments are a reminder of the excellent work conducted at the lab, and the exemplary Idahoans working daily, in a broad range of occupations, to make important advancements.

BONNERS FERRY — This past week end, I had the opportunity to travel around Wall Mountain to explore one of my favorite mountain areas. The location is close to Bonners Ferry, just past Dawson Lake on Meadow Creek Road, a comfortable ride and scenic excursion. The old logging road goes around Wall Mountain and continues almost to the top of Queen Mountain before it descends from the summit to the east side and then around Queen Mountain where there is a clear view of the Moyie River and the Cabinet Mountains of Idaho and Montana. This trip is always a beautiful experience of flora and fauna.

Idaho's steelhead a wild, diverse bunch
BOISE — Steelhead fisheries in Idaho are world class, and the fact that anglers can fish for steelhead from July through April means there is lots of time to enjoy this resource. The fact that we can enjoy these long fishing seasons is due in part to Idaho’s hatchery program that produces lots of fish for anglers to catch and keep.

Spruce grouse season coming up
BOUNDARY COUNTY — Last week, I was on a photo trip, journeying on Ball Creek rail just off the west side road and back into the Selkirk Mountains when I came onto a fairly common sight for the month of August. It was a mother spruce grouse and three of her chicks who were almost fully grown. I can well understand why the spruce grouse are called “fool hens” because they just stayed in the road and let me watch them for awhile, uninterrupted by my presence. I got out of my vehicle and quietly walked forward when one of the grouse became uncomfortable and flew up into a tree. I curiously walked over within 15 feet of the bird sitting on the branch in a shaded area of the tree and took some more pictures. He eyed me suspiciously and then flew away, landing on the roof of my vehicle, which amazed me. I thought, “I hope you are more cautious during the upcoming grouse season!”
Sage grouse conservation
As a lifelong Idahoan, I share an interest in protecting our environment and its unique wildlife. I recognize the importance of our natural resources to our economy and way of life. Given the need to protect the balance between environmental stewardship and our economy, I have concerns with the Bureau of Land Management’s sage grouse management plans that have shut out the state and general public from the important decision-making process. I continue to fight for adherence to the solutions for sage grouse habitat generated by the state and associated stakeholders.

Mace and Vetter families reunite
NAPLES — Great Northwest Territories was the lovely venue for a Mace/Vetter family reunion hosted by Wally and Lillian Smith of Cushing, Minn. Friday and Saturday, July 30 and 31. Out-of-Boundary County attendees were from Calgary, Alberta; Bothell, College Place, Otis Orchards, Newman Lake and Davenport Wash; Moscow and Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Altogether, over the two days, there were 44 attendees. In 2008, when Gerri and Norm King of Bothell, Wash. hosted a very similar event in the local area, there was double the number of attendees as last week's event, but age, infirmities, death, distance and time constraints accounted for this year’s lower turnout. However, there was still as much reminiscing, loving and laughing. Some who attended from Boundary County are descendants (and their spouses) of Bob Vetter, who was a former Herald columnist. They include: Roberta (and Bob) Bowen and Wilma (Vetter) Kirkendall, Steve and Maureen Shelman, Robin Harriman, Carol Mesenbrink (of Coeur d’Alene), Les and Lois Vetter (Moyie Springs), children of Maynard Vetter.

After reading the article about huckleberry picking, I’m curious as to how many fines the Forest Service has collected for commercial picking. Also, I wonder how many people claim their income on their tax forms for selling huckleberries. I see signs in town and at 3-Mile about selling and buying huckleberries, so it should be easy to collect fines from these people. When you pick huckleberries and sell them to someone who is not physically able to go out and pick, shame on you! You should be giving them the huckleberries, as you are not to be picking commercially. I’ve picked berries for years and never sold any. My husband gave them to people who weren’t able to pick their own. I feel it’s time something is done about this problem. Also, too many use those pickers or cut off the bushes so they can pick in confort.
