Help our youth avoid the summer slide
I love summer, but as a parent it can be stressful to keep kids safe and busy. Fortunately, there are summer programs to help. If you have a child engaged in one, you may also have the peace of mind that they are likely offering much more than safety and fun. Summer programs can also offer extended learning opportunities and help prevent the ‘summer slide.’

Grain, canola crops outlook explored
The outlook for wheat prices is not good for U.S. producers this fall, with a forecast of record high production and the largest ending stocks in 29 years. Our strong dollar, made even stronger with the current turmoil in Europe, makes our products more expensive for foreign customers. Excellent forecast wheat production for Spain, France and Russia provides cheaper sources for our international buyers. Thus, local wheat prices are currently predicted to be around $4 per bu for soft white wheat and $5 per bu for Dark Northern Spring. Hard red winter wheat is currently selling for about the same price as soft white wheat.

Oh deer! The fawns are here! Keep an eye out
Everyone thinks whitetail deer fawns are cute and playful; and they are! Last week I was driving by the Kootenai River in western Boundary County when I had the good fortune of spotting a pair of Whitetail twin fawns with their mother beside the road in a grassy open area. They were only a few days old and had some difficulty in managing the terrain and running too safety, but were soon out of sight hiding in the grass and brush. The following morning I saw a single Whitetail fawn beside his mother, he appeared to be only hours old and had trouble walking and keeping up with her, but followed his mother’s lead and was soon gone from my vision, vanishing in the pine trees. I thought how wonderful it is to live in north Idaho where there is an abundance of wildlife and to appreciate their habitat.

Voters: Keep voting for establishment candidates -and keep getting the same results. If we want positive change we need to elect a Sheriff who is committed to conservative action. Dave Schuman is continuing his campaign to be elected Sheriff as a write in. He is our only choice if Boundary County is to be represented by a Sheriff that knows the full extent of the power that the office of Sheriff holds. There are few more important positions in this country. There are many crucial issues our Sheriff needs to take action concerning. These issues include drugs and their debilitating affect on our community, potentially dangerous and financially crippling illegal immigration, unconstitutional laws, second amendment rights, etc. Schuman is to Boundary County what Trump is to our Country. Let’s protect the rights we have left and let’s start with electing a Sheriff who will protect us. Most importantly, make your citizenship count- make an informed vote! Jennifer McLeish
