Startled by a starling leads to a special moment
Last week I was driving on a gravel road by Myrtle creek when I noticed a 12 foot tall old tree stump or snag. It had been dead for years and had several round holes visible, seemingly the size to fit a bird. I started to study the tree when on the northwest side I saw two small yellow beaks and then two heads and soon another head trying to peek out. Just when I realized there were three young birds waiting for their mother to feed them the mother showed up, landed on the top of the old wooden tree and gave me a scolding. I was startled by her aggressive action. I was impressed with her shiny purple black feathers, long and pointed yellow bill and short tail. However, I quickly reviewed my “Birds of Idaho” book to discover that she was a European Starling. I was startled by a Starling!

School year went fast for Mt. Hall and Naples elementary schools
With the end of the school year right around the corner, I find myself amazed at how quickly this school year went. Since the beginning, the emphasis has always been on learning, and so much learning has taken place. From kindergarten to fifth grade, the students will soon be leaving for summer with their brains full of knowledge and hearts full from all the relationships they had made over the past year. Next year is going to bring a lot of change to Naples and Mount Hall, and although change can be hard, change can also be good. I’m excited at the thought of next year. When I began my principalship, I was looking at the school year on a month-to-month basis. Now as I look to next year, I’m seeing the big picture. I know there is still plenty to learn about my job, but I’m excited to embark on next year with my new knowledge. Before I get too far ahead of myself, I need to stay present and reflect on what an exciting month May had been.

Airport News for May
It has been a busy couple of months here at the Boundary County Airport with new certified pilots, first solo flights, and Northern Air being called on to fires in the east. Northern Air has two twin-engine Cessna Sky Master Airplanes that we use primarily for firefighting efforts called Air Attack. In short, Air Attack is where a pilot flies with someone certified to spot fires and act as traffic control in the air. It involves a lot of complex radios and multitasking to ensure the safety of everyone in the vicinity of the fire. To be an Air Attack pilot you must be a licensed Commercial pilot with a minimum of 1500 flight hours. To fly Air Attack in the Sky Master you must have minimum 200 flight hours in a twin engine plane as they require more experience and knowledge to fly. It is an exciting seasonal job that can be very rewarding.

Boundary County declares war on Dalmation Toadflax this summer
Attention Boundary County Residents! We are asking residents to enlist in the “Weed Warriors” to combat the invading noxious weeds in our county. Friday May 27th at 9 am there will be training session at the U of I Extension office in Bonners Ferry. Our guest speaker will be Paul Brusven, biocontrol director for the Nez Perce Tribe of Idaho. Paul will give a presentation on basic biocontrol. So what is bio control you ask? Bio control is using agents such as bacteria, fungal, or insects to control the population of a damaging organism. The Nez Perce Tribe of Idaho has a bio control center that dedicates itself to the control of Noxious Weeds, not only in Idaho but across the United States and Canada. Paul’s class will last approximately 2 hours then we will head north of town to release an agent on an infestation of Dalmation Toadflax. Bio agents are strictly researched to make sure that they won’t cause harm to our native plants. It can take up to 7 years to get approval for the release of an agent. The specific agent that we will be releasing that day is Mecinus janthinus. This little critter when all grown up is approximately 5mm long, bluish-black in color, with a long snout.

Painted turtles bask in Boundary County sun
On a trip around the Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge this past week-end I noticed a number of turtles basking in the sun on a log in a pond of water beside a gravel road. On a closer look I noticed the turtles were painted turtles. The Painted Turtle is the only species of turtle that occurs naturally in Idaho so identifying them is simple. Although, due to escaped pets and introduced species, one must become familiar with the general characteristics of Painted Turtles to avoid confusing them with such turtles a Box Turtles, and Red-eared Sliders (both common pet species).

Ranger District, Department of Lands hosts local students
Employees from the Bonners Ferry Ranger District and an engine crew from the Idaho Department of Lands Kootenai Valley Forest Protective District hosted students on May 5 at the picturesque Kootenai Wildlife Refuge. This event was the grand finale of a comprehensive eight-week long stewardship program, in which Forest Service employees presented information on different natural resources to five 3rd grade classrooms in the Boundary County School District. The students learned about wildland firefighting, plant and wildlife print identification, and how to identify the age of a tree. They also received a tree to plant at home and, possibly the best part, a hug from Smokey Bear. “It is our hope that the program will give students an awareness and appreciation of the resources available in their own county,” says newly retired Forest Service employee and event coordinator, Sondra Steinhorst.

Forest Thinning & Pruning Field Day to be held in Plummer, Saturday, June 18
Trees killed by bark beetle attacks always make forest owners ask: “what can we do about it?” Whether you have problems with insects or disease, concerns about fire, or just want to help forest growth, the response from foresters is nearly universal: thin your forest. This is especially true in northern Idaho, where forests frequently become overstocked. Thinning and pruning can favor better adapted tree species, improve tree quality, reduce fire risk, improve access, and enhance many other values.

Time for Glen Rohrer
Senator Keough is not a true supporter of small business. In 2010, she pushed for rule changes at the Idaho Department of Lands that would only award logging contracts to companies based on highest financial portfolios, over qualifications. A new or small company simply could not be awarded a contract based on these rules. The rules were unanimously denied by members of the Idaho House and Senate. Six months later she was right back at it pushing for these rules of exclusion. As Executive Director of the Idaho Associated Logging Contractors, she is collecting dues from small logging and related companies in the industry, then lobbying behind their backs to put them out of business. The latest company to fold was Blue North Forest Products in Kamiah (just last week) because of the difficulty in procuring logs. It’s time to stop the cronyism and vote for Glen Rohrer.

I had the pleasure of meeting Glenn Rohrer, who is running for the Idaho Senate seat in Legislative District 1, at the candidate forum in Bonners Ferry this month and want to say how much I appreciate his common-sense, conservative stance. It’s refreshing to hear someone who gives you a straight, honest answer to our questions.

I’ve never written a letter about anything, especially politics. Recently there was a letter that wasn’t very complimentary about Shawn Keough. I felt someone who knew the reason needed to speak out. Shawn works tirelessly with both sides of the aisle this is why projects that have been on hold for years are being funded and built. The Dover Bridge, Clark Fork Bridge, the Byway and more. Her opponent won’t get the positions she holds and once again the money will go south. Too many times people get upset because they want something but on their terms. The Hwy through Ponderay for example: it took a long time and some businesses had to close. This wasn’t Shawn’s fault! As the letter I’m responding to said “Pay attention to your candidates and hat they have done and stand for. Please pay attention to what Shawn had done and re-elect her!!

Idaho boat inspection stations ramp up operating hours
This year Idaho is playing hard ball in the fight against quagga/zebra mussels and other aquatic invasive species who think they can hitch a ride by boat across the country and hang out in our waters. The Idaho legislature has authorized stations to be opened from dawn till dusk this season. Targeting early morning and late night travelers. Idaho has been successfully operating mandatory boat inspection stations since 2009, but every year there are some minor kinks to work out. Expanding hours of operation is an important improvement this year and shows Idaho’s commitment to this effort.
