24th Annual Engineering Design Expo: What kind of future will you engineer?

BFHS Robotics Team competes at Western Canada Regional
Bonners Ferry High School FIRST Robotics Team 2130 Alpha+ recently returned from Calgary, Alberta after competing in the Western Canada Regional. This year teams competed from Turkey, Poland, China, Australia, Mexico, Canada, and the United States. The event was a celebration of diversity and the universal language of STEM was spoken by all participants.

BONNERS FERRY — Jesse Dunham didn’t allow a run as he struck out 6 and walked the lead off batter of the game and only allowed two hits to secure a 5 inning, 10-0 win over rival, Timberlake Tigers. The win improves Dunham’s record to 4-0 in the season.

BONNERS FERRY — Three explosions inside of a barn prompted numerous 911 calls around midnight on April 12, with callers reporting that their neighbor’s barn was engulfed with flames.

Post No. 190 set to explore D.C.
Explorer Post No. 190 held their final fundraiser Saturday, exceeding their goal by $204. Eight Explorers and two advisors will be attending the Law Enforcement Memorial Week in Washington D.C., beginning May 11. The memorial pays tribute to the men and women in law enforcement who have lost their lilves while in the line of duty.
IPNF issues county road closures
Coeur d’Alene, Idaho -- The Idaho Panhandle National Forests issued additional road closures on multiple Forest Service roads in Boundary and Bonner County for public health and safety due to flooding damage and unsafe conditions. Warmer weather, snowmelt and heavy spring rains are creating soft road surfaces and spring “break up” conditions on many Idaho Panhandle National Forests roads.

The beauty of Boundary County can best be seen when traveling on foot. Boundary County has more than 350 miles of developed hiking and horseback trail. Hikers can choose easy part day walks or extended backpacking trips. Recently I went on a short but vigorous hike to Myrtle Creek Falls one of the scenic water falls in the Idaho Panhandle National Forest.

KBCI programming goes off-air
BONNERS FERRY — Programming and broadcasting of local KBCI channel 9 have ceased, though the other critical functions of the Boundary County Translator District, associated with translation and rebroadcasting, will continue uninterrupted.
Graham receives Distinguished Service medal
Boundary County Emergency Manager Incident Commander Bob Graham has put his life in jeopardy in order to save the lives of others since 1974. With 43 years of heroic service, Graham’s career was celebrated on April 12 at the Boundary County Extension Office. Friends, colleagues, and fellow emergency responders gathered to wish him well on his second retirement. Graham retired as a U.S. Forest Service District Ranger.
Sportsmen's dinner a success
Justin Gibbins, Pastor at Mountain Springs Church has a passion for two things: Hunting and Jesus. This led him to create the Sportsmen’s Banquet which was held for the third year on April 14, at Mountain Springs Church. Over 260 men — and a couple women — attended the event, to enjoy a night of food, hunting videos, free raffles, and comradeship.

Badgers sweep Wildcats to begin IML title defense
BONNERS FERRY — The Bonners Ferry Badger Baseball team began their Intermountain League league title defense this past Saturday with convincing wins over the Kellogg Wildcats, 11-1 and 10-0. Both games were shortened due to the 10-run rule.

Young Idahoans - helping build an even better Idaho
This Earth Day provides an important reminder of the remarkable natural assets all around us and the considerable work and problem-solving required to sustain these resources so that we all can continue to experience their benefits. I had the opportunity to meet with Idahoans involved in the Idaho Conservation Corps (ICC). The work they are doing to maintain Idaho’s natural resources is worthy of highlighting.

BONNERS FERRY — The Bonners Ferry non-profit lacrosse team is named the Warriors as a nod to the history of the game of lacrosse which began as “stickball,” a Native American contest that was played by tribal warriors for training, recreation and religious purposes.

BONNERS FERRY — Once again Boundary County will be experiencing wetter weather than normal. This moisture added to our already wet conditions may create more sliding and flooding conditions, Boundary County Emergency Manager Michael Meier said in an April 13 press release.

Mudslide uncovers vintage dynamite
BONNERS FERRY — Repeated heavy rains caused two more mudslides in Boundary County, one shutting down U.S. Highway 95 and another exposing two cases of vintage dynamite.
Milt E. Hittle
Milt E. Hittle, 73, of Rudyard, Mont. passed away in his home from his battle with cancer on March 29, 2017. Born to Orval and Ruth Hittle on July 18,1943 in Collbran, Colorado. Milt’s family settled in Idaho in 1946 after living in Washington and Oregon. Milt went to school locally in Bonners Ferry and married Toni Hilton in 1966 where they raised their three children.

Spotted Towhee: The bird with a bunny hop
Recently I heard a rattling song, coming from the ground under one of our bird feeders. Then I noticed a colorful bird about eight inches long. It was a striking bird with a black head, white spotted black wings, white wing bars, and a dark rusty colored body. It had a contrasting white breast and underparts and white was found along the sides of its tail. It had noticeable and distinctive red eyes. A female hopped up beside him and her color was duller, a dark brown instead of black, and her head was more grayish.

Last Wednesday marked the end of the 2017 Idaho Legislative Session. While many important items were left off the table and not discussed, Idaho Democrats continued to push the issues that matter most to Idahoans with reasonable and sensible legislation. And finally, you, the Idaho citizen, became the most important part of the conversation again.
Cleanup week in the City of Bonners Ferry
The City Street Department will pick up yard waste from the front curb side of residences and businesses during the week of April 17 through April 24. Bundled branches and limbs, bagged grass, and bagged leaves will be picked up at no charge through the morning of the last day of the cleanup week.

Marian Francis Morse-Vanderheyden
Marian Francis Morse-Vanderheyden was born in Portland, OR on Nov. 22, 1924 to Edward H. and Blanche Bowman Sparks. She was the older of two children. Her brother was Hal C. Sparks of Bainbridge Island, Wash. Marian survived her daughter, Nancy K. Burton, who passed away in 2002. Marian has two surviving daughters: Becky S. Lamphier (Carl) of Coeur d’Alene and Leslie D. Ashby of Spokane, Wash.
Judy Ann Smith
Judy Ann Smith finished the final chapter of her book on March 4, 2017 at the age of 72. Born in Michigan on June 24, 1944, Judy was a loyal, tender loving and very strong wife for fifty-seven years. Judy was always a friend and helper to anyone in need, be it neighbors or strangers, pouring out her love and compassion to all. She had been the author of the book “Secret Execution by Slow Electrocution” dealing with the subject of slow electrocution of humans through implants powered by external electronic pulses.

Moyie Schrine Club
At a recent visit by the Calam Divan, Movie Shrine Club President Richard Hollenbeck presented an $8000 check to Calam Potentate Russ Graves for the Shriners’ Hospital in Spokane. These funds are the results of the Moyie Shrine Club’s fair food booth, raffle, ice cream booth, and popcorn sales as well as donations from Sater’s Auction and community members. The members of the club are very appreciative to the community for the support given to these fund raising projects that benefit children. The Shriners Hospital provides, at no cost to families, the treatment of all children who are in need of orthopedic or burn care.

Badgers get swept by Bulldogs; then sweep Trail, BC
The Bonners Ferry Badgers baseball team began their home season with two losses from the Sandpoint Bulldogs last Friday. They bounced back on Saturday to sweep the Trail, BC Hawks to improve their early record to 3-2 for the season.

Track team charges ahead as snow melts
BONNERS FERRY — The Bonners Ferry High School Track team had a frustrating start to the season with the only two home meets being moved or cancelled due to snow still covering the track. Despite that, the season looks promising as the team is now able to take to the track and train for upcoming competitions.

Awana holds 22nd annual Grand Prix
BONNERS FERRY — All that was missing was the revving engines and the smell of burnt rubber on Saturday, March 18, when Grace Bible Fellowship along with Springs of Living Water Free Methodist Awana clubbers took time out from reciting Bible verses, playing fast-action games, and participating in Bible/Gospel-based lessons in order to race their hand-crafted pinewood creations.
Donkey Basketball is a Slam Dunk
BONNERS FERRY — Donkey Basketball came to the Bonners Ferry High School, March 30 at 6 p.m., to serve as a fundraiser for the High School athletic department. Donkey Basketball has been around since the 1930’s, and continues to be a popular fundraising medium that thoroughly amuses the participants and spectators alike. This game proved that point, with a good turnout, and spectators cheering on their teams enthusiastically.
