IPNF issues county road closures

Coeur d’Alene, Idaho -- The Idaho Panhandle National Forests issued additional road closures on multiple Forest Service roads in Boundary and Bonner County for public health and safety due to flooding damage and unsafe conditions. Warmer weather, snowmelt and heavy spring rains are creating soft road surfaces and spring “break up” conditions on many Idaho Panhandle National Forests roads.

Hikers can choose easy part day walks or extended backpacking trips. Recently I went on a short but vigorous hike to Myrtle Creek Falls one of the scenic water falls in the Idaho Panhandle National Forest.

Boundary County Emergency Manager Incident Commander Bob Graham has put his life in jeopardy in order to save the lives of others since 1974. With 43 years of heroic service, Graham’s career was celebrated on April 12 at the Boundary County Extension Office. Friends, colleagues, and fellow emergency responders gathered to wish him well on his second retirement. Graham retired as a U.S. Forest Service District Ranger.

Milt E. Hittle, 73, of Rudyard, Mont. passed away in his home from his battle with cancer on March 29, 2017. Born to Orval and Ruth Hittle on July 18,1943 in Collbran, Colorado. Milt’s family settled in Idaho in 1946 after living in Washington and Oregon. Milt went to school locally in Bonners Ferry and married Toni Hilton in 1966 where they raised their three children.

Spotted Towhee: The bird with a “bunny hop”

Recently I heard a rattling song, coming from the ground under one of our bird feeders. Then I noticed a colorful bird about eight inches long. It was a striking bird with a black head, white spotted black wings, white wing bars, and a dark rusty colored body. It had a contrasting white breast and underparts and white was found along the sides of its tail. It had noticeable and distinctive red eyes. A female hopped up beside him and her color was duller, a dark brown instead of black, and her head was more grayish.

Marian Francis Morse-Vanderheyden was born in Portland, OR on Nov. 22, 1924 to Edward H. and Blanche Bowman Sparks. She was the older of two children. Her brother was Hal C. Judy Ann Smith finished the final chapter of her book on March 4, 2017 at the age of 72. Born in Michigan on June 24, 1944, Judy was a loyal, tender loving and very strong wife for fifty-seven years. Judy was always a friend and helper to anyone in need, be it neighbors or strangers, pouring out her love and compassion to all. She had been the author of the book “Secret Execution by Slow Electrocution” dealing with the subject of slow electrocution of humans through implants powered by external electronic pulses.

Moyie Schrine Club

At a recent visit by the Calam Divan, Movie Shrine Club President Richard Hollenbeck presented an $8000 check to Calam Potentate Russ Graves for the Shriners’ Hospital in Spokane. These funds are the results of the Moyie Shrine Club’s fair food booth, raffle, ice cream booth, and popcorn sales as well as donations from Sater’s Auction and community members. The members of the club are very appreciative to the community for the support given to these fund raising projects that benefit children. The Shriners Hospital provides, at no cost to families, the treatment of all children who are in need of orthopedic or burn care.

Donkey Basketball has been around since the 1930’s, and continues to be a popular fundraising medium that thoroughly amuses the participants and spectators alike. This game proved that point, with a good turnout, and spectators cheering on their teams enthusiastically.
