Boundary County is where we call home. It is that time of year to count another group that also calls it home. It is time to survey our feathered friends. No matter the weather, volunteers will start in the first light of the day to begin counting. From the chickadee at the feeder, the dipper in the creek, to the red-tailed hawk soaring up above. Our goal is to get a count of the birds that winter in the greater Bonners Ferry area.

Bonners Ferry High School

We are cruising through the year at BFHS! I struggle to believe it is already midterm of second quarter, and we are quickly approaching the midpoint of the school year. I am proud of the staff and students at BFHS. Great work is happening here. Our greenhouse is up, and we are excited to be working out the last few hurdles to put the finishing touches on that project. We would not have seen this project carried out if it was not for the hard work of our Ag and FFA students and staff. We owe a huge thank you to all those that were part of fundraising efforts that allowed the purchase of this building. We appreciate all of the community support, and we look forward to using the greenhouse to prepare students and to benefit the community. A big thanks to the FFA Alumni for their contribution and support. We are grateful to have a such an amazing resource in the greenhouse, and we are honored to be a focus of community support. We could not have done it without you!

Steller's Jay: Bold, inquisitive, intelligent and noisy!

Last week I was attracted to the feeder on the west side of our house and observed a striking bird with a long, prominent, shaggy crest on its head and a long tail. The front of its body was black, and the black extended midway down his back with the wings luminous blue. It was sitting quietly on a tree branch surveying the surroundings. Then it descended to the ground moving with decisive hops of his long legs. It was a handsome Steller’s Jay.

It’s the pungent, oily, yellow-green liquid that they squirt that is revolting.
