Rock pigeons: Common birds with a wide variety of color
Last week while traveling west on Pine Island road, south-west of Bonners Ferry, I noticed a group of medium sized birds gathered in a flock, they were walking or running on the ground and pecking for food by the railroad tracks. I noticed when alarmed, the flock would suddenly fly into the air and circle several times before landing on a power line or coming back to the ground again. The flock of birds was Rock Pigeons.
Badgers vie for state
COUR D’ALENE — The battle for a berth to state continues for the Bonners Ferry boys basketball team. After losing to Kellogg (88-62) in the semifinal round of the 3A Intermountain League (IML) district tournament last night, Feb. 23, the Badgers will take on Timberlake tonight in a loser-out game to decide who goes to state and who calls it quits for the season.

Hospital designated Level IV Trauma Center
BONNERS FERRY — Boundary Community Hospital has been designated as a Level IV Trauma Center by the State of Idaho. The designation for the Hospital is part of the Idaho Time Sensitive Emergency System (TSE) and is reserved for Hospitals that meet the stringent criteria established by the State as part of the statewide TSE system of care that includes three of the top five causes of death in Idaho: trauma, stroke, and heart attack. Emergency Department Director, Dr. Stu Willis with Gina Gallette, RN have been spearheading the effort at Boundary Community Hospital.

Boundary County's newest gardening club to start in March
There are plenty of green-thumbed residents in the county, which is why local backyard farmer Nancy Russell has taken it upon herself to organize a Boundary County Gardening Club. Russell, who grew up on a farm in the Midwest, hopes that the club will serve as a forum where all of these knowledgeable growers can get together in order to educate one another.

Juanita May Randolph Hudson
Death is inevitable. It is what one does with the gift of life that matters. Juanita May Randolph Hudson entered this life on Dec. 17, 1929, in Edgerton, Wyo. She was one of five children born to Gertrude and Glenn Randolph. She attacked life with a sense of adventure and strength. She married Douglas Sheffler when she was a young girl and worked beside him on the little piece of property overlooking the Kootenai River.

Flour is one of the primary staples of a well-stocked kitchen, and there are a handful of industrial mills with recognizable names that produce the majority of the flour available in the United States: Gold Medal, King Arthur and Pilsbury, to name a few. There are also, however, a few small-scale, family-run mills producing quality, whole grain flour around the country, and one of them is located right here in Boundary County less than five miles from the Canadian Border.

News from Mt. Hall and Naples Elementary
February has been an unpredictable month of school, or lack of school I should say. I know students, staff, and parents are ready to get back to normal. Speaking of normal, this winter has been anything but. However, as I was shoveling the roofs of Naples Elementary and Mt Hall Elementary, I was touched by how many people turned out to help the schools. It was great reminder that it really does take a village. From the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone who helped. Our kids really are worth whatever it takes.

'Backyard Forests' workshop to be held in Coeur d'Alene
COEUR D’ALENE—Homeowners with five acres or less of forestland do not usually want to manage them intesively for timber harvest. Most owners of these “bacyard forests” are primarily interested in keeping their trees healthy and attractive. Unfortunately, many homeowners do not consider doing anything actively until backyard forest trees are visibly suffering from some kind of insect or disease problem. By the time they bring a sample into the Extension Office or some other expert, it is often too late. Remedies for bark bettles, root disease and similar forest health problems are usually preventative.
City forms plan for high five grant
BONNERS FERRY — The City of Bonners Ferry is currently looking at how to best utilize the $250,000 High 5 Community Transformation Grant that was awarded in October of last year. The source of this grant money is the Blue Cross Foundation of Idaho, which works with communities around the state in order to combat childhood obesity.

Mallards: the ducks with gleaming green heads
While traveling along the Kootenai River recently, my attention was drawn to a flock of Mallard ducks flying high over-head in an organized flight pattern. The Mallard duck flies in a V-formation in order to have the lead bird break the head-winds and lower the resistance for the others. As the flock disappeared from sight I thought how the mallard reminds us that we accomplish more if we work together.
