January news from BFHS
Warm Holiday Greetings from Bonners Ferry High School. I would like to take this opportunity to reflect and share. Any position in education comes with its own unique amount of adversity, and my position as Principal at BFHS is no different. However, I can’t quantify the amount of support, feedback, and concern I have been given from this community in a respectful and appropriate manner. My hat is off to the students, teachers, parents, and community members for trusting me to hear them and being patient enough to allow me to “get it right.” We have made some improvements to the security of our building with some serious support from our Superintendent, Gary Pflueger, and our School Board Trustees.

Northern Flickers: part of the woodpecker clan
Last weekend while observing one of our several bird feeders I noticed a stranger to the suet block. As he approached the suet block I observed a flashy color in the wings, a bold white rump in flight, and a black necklace above a speckled chest. I could see by his appearance and behavior it was a woodpecker and after reviewing my “Birds of Idaho field guide”, I discovered it was a Northern Flicker.

This is a recipe I haven’t used in quite sometime. Seems that since I have started writing this column I have had to revisit some of my favorite recipes even if it makes too much for me to eat in one sitting. I break it up and then I have my own TV dinners. The recipe calls for half and half, but I use whole milk instead. Cuts down a bit on the calories.

Murray named BCSD Employee of the Month
I believe without a doubt that the difference between good and great teachers is that great teachers are always learning. We at Naples Elementary have a school full of great teachers, and today I get to recognize one of them. Mr. Jason Murray is the fourth grade teacher at Naples Elementary. Mr. Murray joined the Wolverines this year after moving with his wife, Andra, and their two children from Seattle, WA. I will always remember getting a call last spring from Mr. Murray. His wife had recently been hired as the Director of Curriculum and Instruction for Lake Pend Oreille School District, and Mr. Murray was looking for a position in a nearby district. I’m not one to believe in fate, but I kind of believe that fate brought Mr. Murray to Naples Elementary.
Ties to the Land Workshop to be held Feb. 4 in Bayview
While many landowners would say income from crops or timber harvest is their central ownership goal, most would also mention a place to raise their family, wildlife habitat, and many other cherished ownership values. Many landowners would like to see the next generation of their family pick up where they left off in managaing the family place. But too often, they don’t act on this instinct soon enough, or they may have made some effort towards estate planning and a will, but haven’t brought the next generations of the family into the discussion.

Betty (Elizabeth) Duvall Beck
Betty (Elizabeth) Duvall Beck passed away on Jan. 2, 2017 at her home in Bonners Ferry surrounded by her family after a short illness. The need to shore up Social Security is mounting
In its most recent report out in June, the Trustees of the Social Security trust fund provided another warning that Congress must act now to address the shortfalls of the Social Security trust fund. The trustees reported that the Social Security program will be “unable to pay scheduled benefits in full on a timely basis in 2034” and recommended that lawmakers address these shortfalls soon, so that “a broader range of solutions can be considered and more time will be available to phase in changes while giving the public adequate time to prepare.” Many Americans depend on Social Security, and we must not waste more time and act on this warning to prevent the program’s insolvency.

Winter's here, let's play hockey
The blast of cold weather we’ve experienced recently has allowed the community ice rink to set up nicely. The rink, which is located at the Boundary County Fairgrounds, will be open to anyone with skates when the weather permits, and thanks in part to Steve Petesch and Matt Cossalman, who have taken it upon themselves to organize a recreational hockey league, it will also serve as a hockey rink a few days a week.

Clarification
In a story published on Dec. 22, entitled “School board votes to maintain current levy amount”, we stated that “the district currently depends on this money to ensure that all six of the district’s schools — Mt. Hall Elementary, Valley View Elementary, Naples Elementary, Evergreen Elementary, Boundary County Middle School and Bonners Ferry High School — have enough funding to operate safely, smoothly and effectively.” That sentence should have read, “the district currently depends on this money to ensure that all five of the district schools have enough funding to operate safely, smoothly and effectively,” since the Evergreen school shut down years ago. We apologize for the error.

Audus Winzle Helton
Audus Winzle Helton was born on Oct. 5, 1922, in Bethel, Okla., to Leonard Huston Helton and Berniece Gladys Wright Helton. Two years later, his brother Cecil Houston Helton joined the family. They lived in the southeast Oklahoma hill country where Leonard farmed and trapped for a living and were part of a large extended family. Unfortunately, Leonard passed in 1930, due to a burst appendix, leaving Berneice as a single parent to two small boys. They eventually left Oklahoma to live with relatives in Arizona for a while and then moved on to the Merced/Modesto area of California when Berniece remarried to a man who offered a less than stable family life.
