Wildland fire danger raised to 'very high'
BONNERS FERRY — Idaho Department of Lands and U.S. Forest Service Fire Managers in Bonner and Boundary counties have elevated the wildland fire danger to “Very High.”
SAR team rescues injured hiker from remote location
BONNERS FERRY — Even for the most proficient of hikers, accidents can happen. A wrong turn, a wrong step, a sudden change of weather: all these things can turn an idyllic day in the wilderness into a nightmare scenario. The greatest danger, even to those prepared, is the distance from adequate help or rescue.
City asks residents to take survey
The City of Bonners Ferry is requesting your help by taking 5 minutes or less to fill out a survey that will help shape where the community should spend monies from the High 5 Community Transformation Grant. The survey can be found on by inserting the following web address into your search browser or by navigating to the City’s webpage and clicking on the link on the opening page.

Fair is just around the corner, which means that it’s time for all of us to get together. Come enjoy all the wonderful events our fair has to offer. If you have kids there is the duck and chicken scramble during Family Fun Night. Or even teenagers and adults can participate in the grease pig round-up. There are lots of animals to come see and contests to join. So come on down to the fair!
Border Fire contained by firefighters
The Border Fire was initially reported by a local resident at 7:17 p.m. Sunday, July 23, in the vicinity of the Port Hill Cemetery. Hall Mountain responded swiftly with wildland engines and were able to stop the forward spread of the fire, which was located just south of Port Hill Loop Road. BVA and the Border Patrol also responded to provide support.
Habitat for Humanity ceremony planned Aug. 5
Boundary County Habitat for Humanity invites you to attend a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and Open House for our latest build! This event will take place on Saturday, Aug. 5, at 10 a.m., located at 6707 Spokane St. in Bonners Ferry.

Zane Armin Dittmann passed away on July 20, 2017. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 28, 2017 at the Springs of Living Waters Free Methodist Church in Bonners Ferry, Idaho.

Free sports physicals offered at BCH
Do you have students in grades 7, 9, or 11 who plan to participate in sports, including cheerleading, in the upcoming school year? Then according to the Idaho High School Activities Association, these students will need to have a physical before the first practice starts. This also applies to those students that are new to the sports program who did not have a physical last year, even if in grades 8, 10 and 12.

BONNERS FERRY — Over the past 100 years, there have been numerous natural disasters, wars, recessions, and bombings. There were also good things that happened such as the first moon landing and many sports accomplishments, Babe Ruth’s legendary reign in baseball, among countless others. The early 1900s cars were going from a crank engine to a push start. Now researchers are working on self driving cars, solar panel roofs, and gas alternatives.

BONNERS FERRY — This Old Trunk, owned and run by Heather Bailey, is a local business specializing in home decor, both new and vintage. The store has spaces for local artists and businesses to display their products and wares. With 15 local vendors and room to grow, Bailey says that she is a ‘retail babysitter’ so that community members can rent a space to display their wares without being present for their sales.
Killdeer: A bird that calls its name!
On a visit along the Kootenai River by the ramp of the Sheriff dock west of Bonners Ferry I saw a Killdeer exemplifying the broken-wing display.

Drawing for use of the deer hunt blind on the Wildlife Refuge

BONNERS FERRY — “I’ve been told that our facility would never be able to meet the standards,” said Boundary County Sheriff Dave Kramer about the Boundary County Jail. “It’s been one of my goals.”
Megquier-Houck museum building marks 100 years
In the fall of 1916, Charles W. Megquier began construction on a two story brick building on Main Street. This was to be used as the new Crescent Garage & Plumbing Company. As the Ford touring car dealer and distributor of Fisk tires, Megquier had already presold touring cars in anticipation of the new site. Due to harsh weather, construction was postponed to the following spring.

'Welcome' benches added to museum courtyard
For four sunny days in August 1988, the exciting buzz of chainsaws could be heard on Kootenai Street’s entrance into downtown Bonners Ferry, Idaho. The Boundary County Resource Council, with generous donations from the community, had commissioned a well-known chainsaw artist, Dave Clark of Eureka, Mont., to carve a sculpture on site. The newly carved structure would greet the public as they turned into town by the Visitor’s Center.

Taking on the ultra challenge
This past Saturday I entered my first ultra marathon at Frater Lake, Wash. It is a veteran memorial for Emory Corwine who was a special operations instructor at Fairchild Air Force Base. He was killed in a motorcycle accident July 12, 2012. So the race kicks off at 6:12 a.m. in the morning.
Mountain Springs Church promotes pastor
BONNERS FERRY — Mountain Springs Church has a new pastor stepping up to the church council. Justin Gibbins was officially commissioned on June 11 as the new Teaching and Vision Pastor.

Slugs: Searching for the perfect salad!
During a hot July morning I noticed a grayish slimy track across the concrete driveway. I was surprised at the tracks as it was the driest day of the summer to date. Following the tracks I found what made them, a slug. Slugs are most active at night; their tracks are usually seen more than the slugs themselves. Slugs’ biggest concern is drying out so it tends to seek shelter during the day under debris or in the soil.

All Class reunion returns to Bonners Ferry on Saturday July 29, kicking off with a Huckleberry Pancake Breakfast at the airport at 8 a.m., donations welcome.
Bonners Ferry Summer Theatre in fine form
BONNERS FERRY — On July 20, 21, and 22 Bonners Ferry Summer Youth Theatre (BFSYT) will culminate its 10 year anniversary celebration with a showing of Pirates of Penzance at the Becker Auditorium. Directors David and Dawn Carpenter invite the community to join with them at 7 p.m. each night to showcase the cast of 23, and the intriguing music of Gilbert and Sullivan.
Mr. Suds car wash gets TLC from new owners
BONNERS FERRY — Mr. Suds car wash, across from Wells Fargo Bank, has recently received some updates to the facility. Brothers, Calvin and Travis Dyck, bought the car wash from Mr. Villelli about a year ago and has since fixed and updated the equipment and vacuums.
Summer reading program a hit with Bonners Ferry kids
Where can you find 50+ kids on Thursdays in July? Why, at the Valley View Summer Reading program! This year’s program is starting strong with 47 kids attending our first session, and 60 kids on July 6. With teachers and support staff volunteering their time, we have opened our library. Kids of any age are welcome, and everyone has lunch, checks out books, plays chess, listens to a story read by our downtown librarians, and makes a craft.
'Build a Better World' Magic Show planned July 26 at fairground
The Boundary County Library will wrap up their Summer Reading program with an awesome comedy magic show for kids and families on Wednesday, July 26 at 1 p.m. at the Boundary County Fairgrounds. This year’s theme is “Build a Better World”, and features amazing comedy magic and illusion from Bonners Ferry resident, award winning illusionist and comedian, Dave the Magic Man. Don’t miss this fun and entertaining Event! Late comers will be turned into toads and rabbits!

BONNERS FERRY — Twelve-year-old Abby Bliss is a smart girl who likes to go on adventures. While this may be safe for many children her age, it is not so for Abby, because she is autistic.

BONNERS FERRY — David Koon was among the visitors who came by on Saturday, July 15, to the North Bench Volunteer Fire District Station 1 to help celebrate their 40th anniversary. For Koon, a former North Bench volunteer firefighter, this was coming “back to old stomping grounds.”

Public Invited to North Bench Fire 40th Anniversary Bash
North Bench Fire to host 40th birthday bash: On Saturday, July 15, the North Bench Volunteer Fire District invites the public to a 40th Anniversary Celebration at Station 1 on Hwy. 2, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The crew and board members will be grilling burgers and dogs to give away, holding an open house at the station, demonstrating hose techniques, and generally just trying to say, “Thank you,” to North Bench residents for their past 40 years of support.

Boundary County 4-H Beef program has successful spring
Members of the Boundary County 4-H Beef program have been busy this spring. Four began showing off their animals March 31 in Moses Lake at the North Central Washington Junior Livestock Show. Nine ventured to the Spokane Jr. Livestock Show May 2-7 to show their heifers, prospect steers and five sold market steers.
Wild Horse Trail DAR lists essay contest winners
Each year, Daughters of the American Revolution sponsors an American History essay contest for grades 5 through 8. A different essay topic is selected each year.

Juveniles give back to community
For several months, the Juvenile Probation Department has been brainstorming new and different ways for our juveniles to give back to Boundary County, through the completion of their community service hours.
'MASTERPIECE for Kids' Vacation Bible School offered
Calling all kids ages 4 years old through entering sixth grade! For the eighth year, the Multi-Church Group is presenting an exciting Vacation Bible School July 31 to Aug. 4, from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at Trinity Lutheran, 6784 Cody St., this summer (location varies each year).

Mirror Lake Women's Golf
This week the Mirror Lake Women’s Golf played a game called Honesty. Each player had to predict their score prior to playing and the player closest to that score without going over was the winner. This week Therese Helmer was the winner of the Honesty game. Karen English and Therese Helmer had the low gross score of the week with a tie of 50. Maureen Blackmore had the low net score of the week with a score of 34. Pam Regher had a birdie on hole #2 and Etta Mae Schnuerle and Elaine Morgan had the least number of putts with 17.

Dinning elected president of IACC
Idaho Association of Commissioners and Clerks held its annual conference in Idaho Falls on June 6-8. On June 7, they elected new leadership for 2017-18, where Boundary County Commissioner Dan Dinning was elected as President of IACC.

Being in the proud profession of teaching and learning for 40 years now, I will start with a multiple choice question, “What did I learn this year?” Select one: A) Learning never stops, B) Communication is key, C) Mistakes are educational, D) Respect and trust are earned, or E) All of the above. Easy enough question even though the answers are sometimes hard to come by! Overall, we had a wonderful school year and thanks to all the answers listed above, this will continue into 2017-2018 and beyond. As I will always do, let’s base our progress on safe, civil and productive actions.

BONNERS FERRY — With a high of 95 degrees for the day, the players showed their heart and love of basketball, by giving it their all in Swish, the 3-on-3 basketball tournament put on by the Boundary County Parks and Recreation, held on July 8.

Bonners Ferry FFA places at state
MOSCOW — On June 6, the Bonners Ferry FFA Chapter traveled to Moscow, Idaho to compete in the State CDEs. The chapter left right after school on Tuesday, June 6, so all of the students going on the trip were required to take two of their finals early. Once the vans reached Moscow, the chapter was checked into the hotel and the members had some free time before curfew.

It was wet but Josh Figgins and Matt Odd played through the rain to win the Fry Healthcare Foundation’s 9th Annual Golf Tournament held on Friday, June 16, at Mirror Lake Golf Course in Bonners Ferry.

BONNERS FERRY — The last week of June means the Ace of the Month competition for the Mirror Lake Women’s Golf. In the Tuesday evening group Renee Murphy was the Ace of the Month with a net score of 32. In the Wednesday morning group Linda Rupley was the Ace of the month with a net score of 35.

Meadowlarks have a way to bring a song into your day. I remember as a boy listening to the buoyant, flute-like melody of the Western Meadowlark ringing out across a field in May outside my fifth grade classroom in a rural school. A song like that can brighten anyone’s day.

Kootenai River Run brings the fun, raises funds for scholarships
BONNERS FERRY — “Running is such a great activity because you just need a good pair of shoes... and go,” said Karen Pflasterer. She and her husband, John Pflasterer, along with their dog, Cooper, completed the 5K 2017 Kootenai River Run on Saturday, July 1.

Public invited to dedication of interpretive signs
In 2014, the Idaho Transportation Department proposed replacing the historic Round Prairie Creek Bridge on U.S. Highway 95 near the Canadian border. The 24 feet wide and 31.6 feet long bridge, an example of a tee-beam bridge from the 1930s, was designed in 1932, cast in concrete and completed in 1933. The replacement bridge is to be a full span beam structure with a span length of 52 feet and a width of 44 feet; with abutments of precast concrete founded on pilings. The work will also consist of asphalt overlay, three box culverts and one pipe culvert. The project is funded by the Federal Highway Administration.

BONNERS FERRY — The Friends of the Restorium hosted their annual Picnic Fundraiser on Sunday, June 25. A combination of a barbecue and musical entertainment, as well as a silent auction and a pie sale, made it a special day for the residents of the Restorium.

Idaho Panhandle Forest Supervisor Mary Farnsworth has signed the decision, selecting alternative 2, for the Deer Creek Project located on the Bonners Ferry Ranger District.

Boundary County Community Theatre joins forces with The Pearl
Boundary County Community Theatre has a long history in our area, having produced 60 plays in a wide variety of venues over the last 45 years. The most recent 10 of these productions have been staged at the local, independent Pearl Theater.
