NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING The Boundary County Planning and Zoning Commission will hold public hearing at 5:30 PM Thursday, April 20, 2017 in the Boundary County Courthouse to accept public comment on an Amendment Application, 17-052 by the Planning & Zoning Commission. Application 17-052 involves amending Ordinance 2017-1, Land Use Ordinance, to review proposed changes, specifically addressing updates to: Section 2 - Definitions Section 4 - Enforcement Section 11 - Subdivisions Section 20 - Parcel Divisions The proposed updates are both typographical (correcting formatting and spelling/numbering errors), and substantive. (Substantive changes are changes to actual content which add or delete verbiage thus altering the potential interpretation of an ordinance. An example might be the addition to an ordinance section to state 'No dogs allowed'. Not hard to interpret, but if the words did not exist before, the addition of these words (or removal of them) would be considered a substantive change.) Written comment may be mailed to: Boundary County Commissioners, PO Box 419, Bonners Ferry, ID 83805, faxed to (208) 267-1205 or emailed to planning@boundarycountyid.org. A note on the M&O levy election

I realize that we are a community of many different interests and ideas or even our culture or way of life may differ from each other. Yet we are also a community that in despite of our differences, we stand together in time of need, we know how to carry each others burdens. I don’t know of a place that I would rather live than Bonners Ferry.

Yes vote is crucial to student success

Boundary County schools have an upcoming levy vote on March 14th. This two-year Maintenance and Operations levy supplements the school districts budget, funding portions of the budget that the state does not. Let’s face it, state funding of schools, over the last ten years, has left many of its students high and dry. State funding doesn’t come close to providing a quality education that is so vital to the demands of today’s workers.

Free computer workshops in mapping and forestry coming

BONNERS FERRY — Forestry technology has been undergoing many changes. Managers of large public or industrial forest lands have increasingly combined aerial imagery with geographic information systems to develop ever more sophisticated, geo-referenced forest information. But GIS systems are usually expensive and require a great deal of training to use. Walnut baked rabbit
March 2, 2017 midnight

Walnut baked rabbit

Rabbit is one of the most underused meats. Rabbit meat is well known for its high protein content. A 3 oz. serving of rabbit meat contains 28 grams of protein, more than beef or chicken. Rabbit is also a concentrated source of iron. A serving contains more than 4 mg. Additionally, the meat provides a wide range of minerals. The highest levels include 204 mg of phosphorous and 292 mg of potassium. The calories in rabbit meat are low. A serving contains only 147 calories. Also, rabbit meat is almost cholesterol free and therefore heart patient friendly. Rabbits are one of the most productive domestic livestock animal there is. Rabbits can produce six pounds of meat on the same feed and water as the cow will produce one pound of meat on the same feed and water. All that said, unless you raise them yourself or know someone who does, it is a hard meat to find in the supermarket. Therefore, you can also use this recipe with chicken. I hear that chicken tastes like rabbit!

The bird with the barbed tongue and a drum roll
March 2, 2017 midnight

The bird with the barbed tongue and a drum roll

During the winter I had noticed on several occasions a small to medium size bird foraging mainly on the trunks and limbs of trees and sometimes on shrubs. It was an energetic bird in his search, often probing, scaling off bark, and excavating into dead wood in pursuit of insects. The bird had a fairly square head, a long, straight, chisel-like bill, and stiff, long tail feathers to lean against on tree trunks. His bill was nearly the same length as his head. The bird was entertaining as he would hitch up tree trunks and along main branches in search of his food. He would sometimes feed at the base of trees, along fallen logs, and even on the ground and particularly at the bird feeder. He had a slowly undulating flight pattern like most woodpeckers.
