Cabinet-Yaak, Selkirk Mountains grizzly bear ecosystems update
Trapping in the Selkirk Mountains yielded seven captured grizzly bears during 2017. Two were subadult males, two were adult males and three were adult females. One of the captured adult females was accompanied by three cubs. Trapping occurred during May and June on or around the Boundary Creek Wildlife Management area with three of the male captures occurring during this time. Later in June trapping occurred in Cow and Smith Creek drainages with an adult male and an adult female being captured. During July, trapping shifted to the upper Priest River and 2 adult females were captured. Both of these bears had been previously captured in 2012. August trapping was shifted to the Pack River in the Hellroaring and Caribou drainages. No grizzly bears were captured during this effort. Thanks go to Idaho Fish and Game and the staff at the Boundary Creek Management area for assistance during the spring trapping effort. Tree pruning with a purpose
Fall is a great time to be outside admiring the trees in our landscapes. We take stock of which trees are looking good and which seem to need a little help. If we discover trees that look like they’ve seen better days, we instantly want to solve the problem. It is natural to want to do something to help a plant – prune it, fertilize it, polish it – we can’t help wanting to touch it in some way.

Mt. Hall Elementary School
Greetings from up north. We have snow on the playground and the first progress reports have been sent home for the year. We made it halfway through the first trimester, and our students and staff have been working hard. It’s not all hard work. One student said it best, “[My teacher] is tricking everyone and it seems like we are playing games (dice, topple blocks, etc…) but we are ACTUALLY LEARNING!” Mt. Hall isn’t all tricks either. We had a great time celebrating Halloween with a creepy STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) science lab. Mrs. Myrna Myers and an army of mad scientists transformed the gym into a science lab, and our students were able to make their way through various STEM related stations (slime, polymer snow, and boo bubbles). A spooktacular time was had by all!

Physicians, Nurse Practitioners and Physician’s Assistants care for patients with problems ranging from the common cold to annual physicals, to chronic and serious issues including hypertension, diabetes and heart disease. Rural Health Clinics have helped residents of small communities, like Boundary County, enjoy healthier lifestyles and address more prominent healthcare needs.
