Creating community connections

On Sunday, Oct. 29, from 2-4 p.m. at the Homestead Great Room, located at 3 Mile in Bonners Ferry, the Boundary County Human Rights Task Force is hosting a gathering of task force and community members to meet, enjoy music, food and good company. We invite the community to come together to learn about our local human rights task force. In 1986, the Boundary County Commissioners asked the Ministerial Association to form a local human rights group to stand up for equality and to oppose a white separatist group looking to relocate in Boundary County. The BCHRTF is founded upon the principle of the dignity and worth of all human beings and is committed to the pursuit of the ideals of justice and equality for all people. Join us to celebrate and spread awareness of human rights! All are welcome! We hope to see you there.

All American Apple Pie

I just finished harvesting my apples as I am sure many if you also have. Here is an apple pie I have had much success with. Remember when making that pie crust use cold, not room temperature, butter and ice water in your ingredients. Work your crust when it is cold and it will be light and flakey. I mix mine then put it in the refrig while mixing my pie filling. Then I roll it and place it in the pie tin. Enjoy.

Rick Maggi, who lives just south of Bonners Ferry attended a giant pumpkin weigh off north of Seattle on October 6, his entry weighed in at 1268 pounds with a circumference of over 14 feet. The weight of Maggi’s giant pumpkin surpassed the standing 1219 pound record held by Brett Brown of Peck Idaho. Maggi says this is the third time he has held the record in the past several years but expects his current record to be short lived, having heard that a southern Idaho man expects to weigh in a much larger (grown in a greenhouse) pumpkin in the next week. Maggi says records come and go, that’s all part of hobby.

Are we prepared?

BONNERS FERRY — In an uncertain world filled with terrorist attacks, mass shootings, natural disasters, and more, there is an underlying concern as to how such things will be handled. Will everything fall apart, or will the community come together? Although all of our first responders train on a regular basis, how will they respond when a large crisis hits home? How will all of the individual departments work together?

Badger girls soccer team tops Kellogg

BONNERS FERRY — The Bonners Ferry Girls’ Soccer team hosted Kellogg last Thursday in Intermountain League play, and came away with a 1-0 victory. Junior midfielder Falisha Elliston converted a 60th-minute penalty kick for the game’s only score, and the Badger defense was stellar in stopping the few Wildcat scoring opportunities to complete the shutout.

'The BULLY': A story with important issues for our community

Our story this week takes place in a small town in Middle America. “Little Bill” lived there with his mom and siblings. As single parent families go, their existence was adequate but there are few luxuries in their life. Little Bill didn’t have “things” like new school clothes, his own phone, access to a computer or even a television. He did have his own “RV” a bicycle that was both his recreation and his transportation.

Zucchini brownies

Have too much zucchini? Here is a great recipe for using some of it. This recipe really surprised me. The batter is very dry and hard to mix, but the brownies turned out very moist. I did not use icing as I feel the brownies are sweet enough. I even think it would make a great birthday cake.
