Fifteen Badgers qualify for state

| February 27, 2020 1:00 AM

RATHDRUM — Bonners Ferry had four champions at Saturday’s 3A District 1 wrestling tournament, hosted by Lakeland High School, and 11 other Badgers qualified for this weekend’s state tournament.

Jake Summerfield (106 pounds), Evan Barajas (126), Manuel Naccarato (145) and Kyle Smith (152) won their weight classes, and will advance as district champions to the Ford Center in Nampa this weekend. Action begins on Friday and concludes Saturday.

Earning runner-up finishes in their weight classes were Taylor DeFalco (98), Spencer Eby (132), Bryan Durette (145), Eli Richards (160) and Andrew Sandelin (195).

Richards, with a 38-9 record on the season, lost a very competitive, 10-9 decision to Timberlake standout Caleb Miller (41-8) in the 160-pound championship match.

Third-place finishers for BFHS were Chad Maas (138), Jackson Richter (170) and Isaiah Shottanana (220).

The top three finishers at district qualified for state, with three other Badgers — Marcus Regehr (126), Nathaniel Varelman (182) and Jack Duffy (285) — earning wild-card berths with their fourth-place finishes.

Ravi Nuemeyer (113) also finished fourth for Bonners Ferry, which finished third as a team at districts behind Timberlake and Kellogg.

“The top three placers automatically qualify for state, and two wild-card berths are picked in each weight class throughout the state who meet a certain criteria,” Badgers assistant coach Corey Richards said. “This allowed three of our fourth-place finishers to earn state berths.

“The rest of the kids battled hard but came up short of placing and missed the chance to a qualify for state,” he added. “We can enter two kids per weight at our districts and we had 21 wrestlers entered. The ultimate goal is to have 30 at districts.”

Lilly Morgan, Shaylynn Richards, Seth Fisher-Fodge, Camille Ussher, Sky Rienhardt, Evan Nesbit, Daniel Zeck and Jordon Freeman were the other Badgers who finished out the season.
