Washington State Junior Rifle Championship Results

| May 6, 2021 1:00 AM

Junior rifle shooters from the Sandpoint and Kootenai Valley clubs participated in the Washington State Smallbore Indoor Championships this past February. The final standings were just registered. Because of the gathering restrictions in Washington, the participants shot at the Kootenai Valley range and sent the scores in for the final tally.

Each individual shot at a distance of 50 feet, using single shot .22 rifles with iron sights. They aim for a dot not larger than the period at the end of this sentence to score 10 points.

Shooting 40 shots, in the Prone position, Ellie Rutherford tied for third Intermediate Junior (15-17 yr old) in a field of 15 shooters. Paige Sartell also took third place, but in the Sub-Junior class (under 15).

In the Standing position, again 40 shots, Gretchen Weig of Sandpoint tied for third as an Intermediate Junior. Salix Harris was third in the Sub-Junior class.

Gretchen Weig, in the kneeling position, and another 40 shots, again took third place.

Placing well in each position, and winning by just one point, Gretchen Weig was top in the Class A shooters. Salix Harris led the Class B shooters.

Gretchen, Ellie, Meggie Kahanek and Salix would team up to place fourth, missing the third spot by only nine points.

Our shooting teams and competitions are open to everyone but our local Junior rifle teams are currently dominated by women.

Club activities are over for the season but if you are interested in learning more about this sport stop by the range at 67175 Highway 2, Bonners Ferry on Wednesday or Thursday evenings after October 1, 2021.
