SPIRIT LAKE — Bonners Ferry baseball beat Timberlake by one run on May 11, becoming district champions for the third year in a row and advancing them to play in the state tournament May 19 to 21 at Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa.

The Badgers were second-seeded in the Intermountain League.

Against Timberlake, Porter Schulte put Bonners Ferry ahead 4-0 on a two-run triple in the third inning. Wilson Newell also had two RBIs for the Badgers, which split games with Timberlake in the regular season.

Head coach Tom Turpin said it was a great game just as he thought it would be.

“We held a 5-0 lead going into the latter innings and held on to win 5-4. The boys played incredibly well. I’m really proud of them,” he said.

Timberlake did not advance to the state tournament due to losing to third-seeded Kellogg in a loser-out second place game in the 3A District 1 tournament on May 12.

The Badgers will open the state competition against Marsh Valley on May 19.

“Marsh Valley has had a great year and we’re looking forward to competing against them at state,” Turpin said. “I told the boys we were one of eight teams left and to just go out and play hard and leave everything on the field. We’ve had a great year too and should be proud of our season.”

Bonners Ferry (13-11), has won the previous two district titles. Marsh Valley (19-3) is the first-seeded for the state tournament. The game is scheduled for May 19, at 10 a.m.
