Boundary County Middle School students recently headed to Washington, D.C., to explore the nation's capitol and surrounding area.

A total of 19 students and four chaperones took part in the trip after spending 18 months fundraising and preparing for it. The group left in June shortly after school was out, spending five days visiting the region, including Jamestown and  Williamsburg, Va., Paula Harris Burt said.

Students were able to visit a number of memorials, including Jefferson, Lincoln, Washington, Air Force, World War II, Vietnam Wall, Korean War, 9-11 as well as the Pentagon. The group also spent time at the Smithsonian, and students visited the Botanical Gardens, National Archives, Natural History Museum and American History Museum. In addition, the group visited the White House, Capitol Hill, where they "were lucky enough to get a tour inside," and Mt. Vernon.

In addition, the group attended a performance of "Twilight Tattoo" on the Joint Base Myer-Henderson, which told the history of the U.S. Army.

"We came home exhausted but full of so many memories and new friendships," Burt said.

The next trip will be June 2024. Parent meeting for upcoming trip is Oct. 5 at 6 p.m. in Room 7 of the middle school.
