BONNERS FERRY — Badger girls soccer is 6-4 after losses against Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy on Monday and Lakeland on Saturday, Sept. 24. The Badgers beat Stillwater Christian by seven on Friday, Sept. 23.

The team is looking at a packed week of league games.

On Monday against Coeur d’Alene Charter, the Badgers fell 8-1.

Coach Emily Winebark said Charter is always No. 1 in the league, fielding an exceptional team. To counter them, Winebark said the Badgers went in with a more defensive formation.

The Badger girls soccer senior night is on Thursday against Timberlake.

The Badgers fell to Lakeland 5-0. The score was 1-0 at the half, with the Hawks forwards and midfielders were aggressive, fighting for the ball in the air and attacked Bonners Ferry’s goal. The Badgers fought until the end.

Winebark said going into the game, the plan was to give less experienced players more playing time and not worry about the score.

"They were doing good in the first half, so I kept the starters in. It was one zero at half. We just got into our own heads and stopped marking [the Hawks],” Winebark said.

By the second half, less experienced players were given the chance to face such a strong team and to gain experience, Winebark said.

“They need game experience, even if it is scary sometimes. Our seniors and juniors aren’t going to be around forever, so you’ve got to get the younger players a feel of the game,” she said.

The Badgers beat Stillwater Christian 8-1. In the first three minutes, Brooke Petesch scored for the Badgers. By the half, the Badgers were up 4-0.

“We played really well. Had a lot of good give-and-go passing and triangles as we’re getting to connect on plays and gain confidence,” Winebark said.

She said the score shows the Badgers improvement, but the goal for the team is to build confidence.

“We know a lot, but the season is half way over and we need to know that we know,” she said. “Being first to the ball, knowing that our feet know what to do and keeping our heads up.”

Last time the Badgers and Jaguars faced off Bonners Ferry won, 3-2.
