15 Years Ago ~ August 27, 2009 ~ From the Bonners Ferry Herald: “The North Bench volunteer firefighters were already in the area at the time of the fire, having gathered for training at the fire station located across the highway. A few minutes after arriving, firefighters saw smoke and then flames spewing from the top of the main building. A call was made for mutual aid – Bonners Ferry, Curley Creek, and Hall Mountain fire departments responded. North Bench taking the lead."

Comments sought on Avista cost adjustment application
Public comment is being sought on Avista Utilities' power cost adjustment application for its electric service. Avista is proposing a rate adjustment of 0.205 cents per kilowatt-hour. If approved, about $6.6 million would be rebated to customers starting Oct. 1.

An arson suspect was deemed incapable of assisting with her defense and ordered into treatment. In the Aug. 21 court hearing, Judge Debra Heise found Jennifer Suzanne Meyer was "significantly impaired," lacking the ability to assist with her defense or understand the proceedings. However, a mental health evaluation found Meyer, 50, was not dangerously mentally ill.

Temporary traffic signals to return at McArthur Lake
Beginning Wednesday, drivers traveling between Bonner and Boundary counties will see the return of temporary traffic signals. However, their return is temporary to give work crews some breathing space, said Heather McDaniel, public information officer for Idaho Transportation Department. The signals are being reactivated to allow installation of a guardrail and temporary barrier.

Saddling Idahoans with student loan cancellation is irresponsible, unaffordable
The higher education system warrants careful review as rising tuition costs and the amount of student loans disbursed for education saddle students and graduates with financial difficulties. But, placing the burden of our nation’s outstanding student loan debt on taxpayers, including Idahoans who have worked hard to pay back their loans, is irresponsible and unaffordable. Student loan relief is not free; it must be paid for in part by the overwhelming majority of Americans who do not benefit but are impacted by record-high inflation. The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget estimates all of President Biden’s student loan policies may cost taxpayers as much as $1.4 trillion.
