County’s first snowfall prompts 20 weather-related traffic reports
From Nov. 18 through 24, there were at least seven accidents and 13 slide-offs reported in in the county. Most, if not all of these incidents were in some capacity related to weather, according to BCSO records. There was also a fatal car crash in Bonner County.

About 100 people – the first arrived at 5:45 a.m. - waited for the national grocer to open its doors at 8 a.m. With the Lake City High School cranking out loud, high-energy music, the crowd surged forward.

Governor’s office takes notice of grassroots push to replace Valley View
District officials met with local contractors on Wednesday to brainstorm a grassroots effort to replace Valley View Elementary. District 1A State Rep. Mark Sauter attended the closed-door meeting via Zoom. Last week, Sauter and Lt. Gov. Scott Bedke toured Valley View in the wake of the district's third failed bond measure to replace the deteriorating school.

A new elementary school will cost taxpayers whether a bond passes or not.
Since November 1989, only one bond measure to improve schools in Boundary County has passed. The latest attempt – one to replace Valley View Elementary – failed last Tuesday, adding to a long list of setbacks.

Born in 1888, Agnes May Carleton graduated in 1911 from the Massachusetts Faulkner Hospital nursing course. She completed her post graduate course at the Infants Hospital, and in 1915, she became a registered nurse. During 1917 and 1918, U.S. nurses were urged to enroll in the Red Cross drive to serve “your country.” Agnes enrolled in the Reserve of the Army Nurses Corps and consented to active duty during WW I.

Pair do well at rifle competition
Two members of the Kootenai Valley Junior Rifle Team traveled to Spokane on Nov. 2 to participate in the first match of the year, which was the Washington State International Rifle Championships. Shooters could choose to shoot the match at the Spokane or Tumwater rifle ranges.

'It’s a big deal': Nursing shortage affects increasing demand in North Idaho
Growing population, not enough instructors, retirements affect nursing numbers
The 2024 nursing workforce report is out and in Idaho, even with gains in the number of graduates statewide, there just doesn’t seem to be enough nurses to keep pace with the need, according to the Idaho Nursing Center. Cyndy Donato of Kootenai Health said, “Idaho's nursing landscape faces challenges due to a growing population and increasing retirements.”

Bryan Kohberger and his attorneys were back in a Boise courtroom Thursday in their push to drop the death penalty as a possible sentence with murder convictions in the killing of four University of Idaho students at trial next summer.
