The remarkable history of Mt Hall and Valley View schools
If you were a student in Boundary County in the first half of the 1900s, this is what your educational landscape looked like: Bonners Ferry had Bonners Ferry High School, a centralized school for high-school age students from all over the county. Northside School and Southside School were also in Bonners Ferry, housing students through the first eight grades of their education.

Happy Halloween!
Proposition 1 is a bad idea for Idaho
Idaho has historically been a conservative state; we look out for each other. Idaho has a one person, one vote system. Special interest groups with big money donors are trying to change our election so it can be corrupted.
Upcoming events at the Pearl
The Pearl Theater has always been the venue to see concerts and plays in Bonners Ferry, but that isn’t all you can find there. The theater is expanding programs to include a wider variety of events. Events include groups, workshops, a drum circle, karaoke, and much more.
Fulcher is a nattering nabob of negativism
I lifted this title from the disgraced former vice-president who served with Richard Nixon. Just last Tuesday, I attended a meet-and-greet event at the Boundary County Fairgrounds for Congressman Russ Fulcher.
Community's generosity helping many in area
Thank you to our generous community members and businesses supporting the Selkirk Association of Realtors' annual Fall Food Drive benefitting our local Community Action Partnership Food program. This year, with your help, we donated $1703.22 and 917 pounds of food/provisions to our local Bonners Ferry Food Bank.
Prop 1 will make elections more complicated
Prop 1 will, through the introduction of open primaries and ranked choice voting, make it more difficult to navigate choosing who we elect.
Vote yes on the replacement M&O school levy and bond
It is important for all of us to get out and vote to support both the school M&O replacement levy and the Valley View bond.
Prop 1 will take away one person, one vote
Prop 1 will first of all take away your one person, one vote.
Matthee puts in the effort
I have been excited to vote for Karen Matthee for House Seat 1A since I heard her effective responses at the candidates forum.
We need ranked choice voting in Idaho
Do we want to send our District 1 U.S. representative to Washington — with only 18% of the vote? Under the present system, that is possible in this Nov. 5 Russ Fulcher (incumbent) race — four candidates on the ballot plus two certified write-ins, totaling six.
Open primaries favor the average voter
Closed primaries, in states that are monopolized by one party (like Idaho or Oregon), allow relatively small, highly motivated, extreme groups to dominate their parties by allowing those groups to focus all of their resources on the primary election rather than the general election where they have to appeal to a broader electorate.

General election candidates and issues
Measures and candidates on the ballot in Boundary County.
A privilege & a responsibility
From candidates to local option taxes to levies, there is no shortage of important races and issues on the general election ballot.
Larson will work to preserve our quality of life
I met Kathryn Larson recently and was impressed that she is not only highly qualified but will work hard to ensure that our quality of life in Idaho will be preserved and enhanced.
Matthee will help bring back our doctors
Childbirth no longer happens at Bonner General Health in Sandpoint. Idaho's legislature has ruled that "a person in Idaho who performs an abortion may face 2-5 years of imprisonment." Now all our local OBGYNs have left the state to practice elsewhere. Families must now travel out of state just to give birth. And medical emergencies happen, often quickly; families might not have to the time or the money to find proper medical care in another state.
Karen Matthee builds bridges
Last week, I had the pleasure of door-knocking with Karen Matthee to unaffiliated and Republican voters. It was a bit outside my comfort zone if I’m honest.
Sauter gets things done for region's farms, ranches
Mark Sauter’s record of getting things done for North Idaho needs to continue. In 2024 he voted for six Idaho agriculture-related bills that were signed into law. He co-sponsored legislation creating a depredation fund to cover livestock losses from wolves or grizzlies, both predators inhabit Boundary County.
Schools need Mark Sauter to be re-elected
Education is the backbone of our community. Rep. Mark Sauter has been consistent in his support of our public schools throughout his service as our District 1 Representative. He has supported and voted for career technical education, the Launch program, Facilities Funding, etc.

Court records from Sept. 28 to Oct. 4, 2024.
Prop 1 is a ranked choice voting scheme
Proposition 1 is being marketed as the ticket to “Open PriPrmaries” by its supporters, but it’s really not. It is a ranked choice voting scheme in which you get three ranked choice votes, for a single position.
Disability History Month shining light on need for equity, inclusion
Disability expression through art
I started calling myself an artist in 2019. And that is what I do, I make art. I make really good art. I even have a degree in it. I'm even working on another as I write this, a master's degree! I mostly make art about my experiences having Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
Larson supports what North Idaho values
My family has been Republican ever since I can remember. The values of the Party of Lincoln run strong. Yes, there were some bumps when the politics of Joe McCarthy dominated. But for the most part, we stayed on that commonsense path that supported local institutions that promoted the general welfare and policies that opened the door to opportunity.
Protect democracy by voting against Prop 1
Let's cut right to the chase about Proposition 1. The political left always talks about the importance of "protecting our democracy." How does Prop 1 do that when, under its ranked-choice voting model, the candidate with the most first-choice votes may end up losing the election when all is said and done?
Say no to communism, reject Prop 1
I was quite amused when reading the recent letter entitled "Prop 1 will help ensure our republic."
Matthee will be a leader for conservation
I’ve gotten to know Karen Matthee primarily through the Bonner County Climate Coalition, which I lead, and she is the candidate I can support for House Seat 1A.
Idaho families, Karen Matthee has your back
I am voting for Karen Matthee on Nov. 5 because I believe she will work hard for Idaho families. She understands that many Idahoans are struggling with the high cost of living – and that the difficulties are compounded by a GOP-led state government that does not support working families with young children.
Who benefits from Proposition 1?
The proponents of Proposition 1 claim it is a grassroots initiative.
Current system is the real 'jungle' primary
Opponents of Prop. 1 claim it will create a "jungle" primary. Sorry, folks, but we have a jungle primary system now. Both the Democratic and Republican parties have been fielding upward of 20 candidates, each, in the presidential preference primaries for the last few election cycles. The presidential preference primary, in Idaho, will most likely be back on the ballot in 2028.

Closed primaries are the true rigged elections
A lot of signs are popping up proclaiming “Rigged Choice Voting” and urge voters to vote “NO” on Proposition 1. Which election system is “rigged”? Is it “Open Primaries with Ranked Choice Voting” or our current “Closed Primary” system? I contend it is the current system while Proposition 1 would give voters more choice.

Matthee's concern, support for area is genuine
I urge all voters to join me in casting your ballot for Karen Matthee, Seat 1A Representative. Having met Karen and spent time with her, she is genuine in her concern and support for all her constituents. She really listens and candidly shares where she stands on issues. Her focus on public schools and libraries and bringing back our doctors to provide healthcare for all of us are topics that are near and dear to me.
Idaho's overreach behind desire for voter reform
Why are so many Idahoans in favor of open primaries and instant runoff (ranked choice) voting? The desire for voter reform in Idaho is due to our state government's overreach.
Let’s give credit where credit is due
Let’s be clear. It was the Democrats in the Idaho Statehouse, and in particular, Sen. Melissa Wintrow, who deserve credit for working for more than a decade to increase the amount of contraceptive prescriptions women could purchase at a time from three months to 6 months.
School district deserves yes vote from community
I would like to take a moment to thank all those who make voting in Boundary County a pleasure. From easy-to-read information, courtesy, notifications, and signage it would be rude not to vote after all your hard work. Thank you.
Don't let minority rule; vote for Prop. 1
Are you still wondering whether or not you should vote for Proposition 1? May I share my opinion? Yes, yes, yes.
Vote for Prop 1 for balanced government
Democrats and independents and Republicans, oh yeah. I vote for candidates based on their qualifications, ideas, and character, not parties, to lead.
Mark Sauter is your voice in Boise
I am backing Mark Sauter for House Seat IA. I’ve known Mark since 2012. Mark is a retired fire chief. He has also worked as a paramedic. He was even tapped by his city council to be a “stand-in” city manager for a while. They obviously recognized his leadership capabilities.

How does a school district lower property owner’s taxes? By being proactive instead of reactive. For example, replacing a roof during the summer instead of after it collapses under a big snow load in winter.

Larson has the qualities needed in a representative
Kathryn Larson, WOW! Now that’s a candidate, actually for Legislative Seat 1B. Kathryn has all the qualifications you would want for your Representative in the Idaho State Legislature.
Kathryn Larson is a proven problem-solver
On any given week, my husband and I are working five or six jobs between us to support our family. We get by, and the kids are happy, but we work our fannies off and frequently feel left behind by our local economy. I want an economy and political representation that works for us — so I’m voting for Democrats like House of Representatives candidate Kathryn Larson in November.
Proposition 1 is the right route for Idaho
Over the past year, I’ve spoken with hundreds of voters in my community to inform them about the Open Primaries Initiative (Proposition 1).
Sauter a has strong record of service
Representative Mark Sauter is effective and experienced. These qualities make him the best choice to represent the interests and values of District 1.
Keep it simple, reject Proposition 1
Idaho currently has an election system which is simple, and everyone can understand.
Matthee will help untangle Idaho's healthcare crisis
For months now, Karen Matthee has addressed the loss of our doctors in Idaho. She will do something about it and that’s why I’m voting for her on Nov. 5.
Ranked choice voting gives power to voters
My personal experience with open primaries and ranked choice voting is positive. I lived in Alaska for 36 years and am a Republican.

Prop 1 gives say to voters, not parties
I strongly support Proposition 1 because I want every voter in Idaho, regardless of party affiliation, to be able to select the Primary candidates who are best suited for their communities, not the candidate that represents a small, powerful group in either party.

Panel tackles Proposition 1 at forum
Panelists discuss open primaries, ranked-choice voting initiative
A concern about ranked-choice voting is that it splits the number of votes from the majority party and paves the way to victory for minority candidates. Luke Mayville recently had this discussion with someone who asked if that's what happened in the 1992 presidential election when Bill Clinton won with 42% of the vote because Ross Perot ran against George H.W. Bush, splitting the conservative vote. "The answer to that is if they had had ranked-choice voting, it would have solved that problem," he said.
