Community barbecue at Restorium draws hundreds
BONNERS FERRY — Several hundred community members gathered on June 28 for the annual community barbeque at the Boundary County Restorium, pitching donations to the Friends of the Restorium to enjoy burgers and hotdogs, as well as basket raffles and a live auction for homemade pies.
“I count the event a big success as it brought community together for good food, fellowship, and an old-fashioned neighborhood gathering,” said Judy Dirks, event coordinator with Friends of the Restorium. “This event is one means of allowing us to enhance the quality of life of our senior neighbors who call the Restorium home.
“I especially would like to express our appreciation to Rachel Johnson, Restorium kitchen supervisor, who puts in many hours beyond the day of the event,” Dirks added. “Thanks to Kevin Scnuerle, who volunteers several days to make sure the grounds are picture-perfect, the setup is just right, and all is back in order following the event. Galen Ensz was our auctioneer extraordinaire. The ladies of Woodland and Mountain View Church of God in Christ Mennonite churches provided 70 delicious pies to top off the meal. Terry Johnson, for the second year, donated restroom facilities with handwashing. And dozens of volunteers served and helped wherever needed.”
Moyie Springs Mayor Geoff Hollenbeck was one of several cooks wielding a spatula at the large charcoal grill. Though he has been grilling for several years at the annual event, Hollenbeck said he is “not even close” to being the grill master.
The tradition of holding an annual community barbeque at the Restorium dates to the 1960s, before the current Restorium was built, Dirks said. Back then, the event was much different. The dinner was held inside, and it was typically a bit more formal than the events in recent years, with roast beef and fixings.
“I love the people, that’s what this event is all about,” said Galen Ensz before beginning the live pie auction.
