Spotting a great horned owl is such a hoot!

Contrary to its name, the great horned owl has no horns! It is named for the tufts of feathers that sit on top of its head, called plumicorns. Scientists don’t know why these owls sport the tufts, but they do have a few theories. The tufts might help members of their own species to recognize each other among the forest around them, or they may use the tufts to blend into their surroundings. Making them look more like broken tree branches than a tasty meal.

Black beans with rice and tomato salsa

This is a recipe I have been making for about 25 years. It is probably the first bean recipe I actually enjoyed. You can use canned beans and dried herbs, but I prefer to used dried beans and fresh herbs. I will put the equivalents below. This recipe is also best if made a day ahead and reheated.

Welcome back; it is Homecoming already!

BFHS is off to the races this school year, and we are in the full swing of Homecoming already! It is awesome to have the staff and growing student population back in our building for the school year. The first four weeks have flown by, and the all-around vibe in our building is positive. With a large ninth Grade class and more than a handful of new staff members entering the building, there are many new faces and names to try and remember. New additions and familiar faces are working together to create a climate of Badger Awesome. Our staff has accepted the challenge of raising the academic and behavioral bar at BFHS, and our students have continued to impress with their efforts in meeting the new standard.

BONNERS FERRY — This past week end, I had the opportunity to travel around Wall Mountain to explore one of my favorite mountain areas. The location is close to Bonners Ferry, just past Dawson Lake on Meadow Creek Road, a comfortable ride and scenic excursion. The old logging road goes around Wall Mountain and continues almost to the top of Queen Mountain before it descends from the summit to the east side and then around Queen Mountain where there is a clear view of the Moyie River and the Cabinet Mountains of Idaho and Montana. This trip is always a beautiful experience of flora and fauna.

Health of Idaho forests key to addressing wildfire costs

Idaho has the unfortunate distinction of being in the top five states for acres burned by wildfire in 2022, including the disastrous Moose Fire that impacted Salmon, Idaho, and other nearby communities. The Moose Fire burned for more than 100 days and consumed more than 130,000 acres. Wildfires are burning longer and hotter, harming natural resources, wildlife habitat, budgets and workforces. They also carry an immense human toll, including the loss of firefighters who risk all to keep communities safe, health issues from smoke-clogged skies and lost homes and livelihoods.
