A one-year-old Bonner County boy who was allegedly kidnapped by his non-custodial mother has been found safe and is being returned to his family, local law enforcement officials said Thursday.
Voter turnout expected to double in West Bonner recall election
Bonner County officials expect twice the voter turnout for next week’s recall election than two years ago, when the school board trustees were first elected. “There’s huge interest in this,” said Bonner County Clerk Michael Rosedale. Embattled West Bonner chairman Keith Rutledge and vice chairwoman Susan Brown will learn their fate Tuesday when five voting precincts close at 8 p.m. Displeased patrons and parents mounted an effort to recall them following the controversial hiring of new superintendent Branden Durst.
Initial WBCSD forensic audit delayed
SOS non-profit filing draws concern
Initial results from a forensic audit of the West Bonner County School District have been postponed as the auditing firm waits for additional documentation. To prepare the preliminary report, Waldren said the firm needed all data for the audit period of 2018 to 2023 by Aug. 1. However, as of Aug. 25 — the date Eide Bailly planned to deliver the report — some of the data needed had yet to be given to the firm. Also, a Secretary of State filing listing the district as a non-profit has raised concern that some on the WBCSD board are attempting to convert at least part of the district into a charter school. District officials said that is not the case and is merely an effort to move the audit forward.

The Kellogg School District is facing two different lawsuits stemming from a highly publicized incident earlier this year after a student made a controversial statement during an assembly.

Heading into the woods? Be bear aware
With more people venturing into the forested areas of North Idaho during the summer months, bear encounters are becoming more common, although bear attacks are not. While bear attacks are uncommon in the Idaho Panhandle, it is important to know how to avoid encounters with these animals altogether. Idaho Parks and Recreation public information specialist Chelsea Chambers offered some tips for hikers and other outdoor recreationalists on how to avoid coming face-to-face with a bear as well as how to protect yourself should a bear encounter occur.

Initiative drive is good news for voters
Friday, August 18, Luke Mayville, head of non-partisan Reclaim Idaho, will be in Bonners Ferry to kick off the initiative petition drive to give all Idaho voters freedom to vote in one open primary which combines all parties and independent candidates. Currently, a quarter million independent voters are unable to vote in a closed party primary. Many signatures from a majority of the districts are required to get this initiative onto the 2024 general election ballot; once on this ballot, a majority of the voters need to approve, then it becomes law.
We cannot wait around for an economic earthquake
Fitch Ratings’ recent downgrade of our country’s currency default rating should come as no surprise, especially when considering the rating’s key drivers. This includes the federal government’s last-minute and reckless mismanagement of enormous fiscal policy issues and the predicted rise of the deficit to an astounding 5.8 percent of the gross domestic product in fiscal year 2023. Cumulative debt is projected to exceed the country’s GDP next year. Many of us have been warning about these economic tremors for years, and we must act now to prevent further fiscal disaster.

Durst escalates dispute with state education leaders
While West Bonner considers legal action against the state, superintendent Branden Durst is delaying his promise to lead the district with an emergency certificate. Durst disagrees with the opinion of state education leaders. He surmised that a district cannot have two superintendents with emergency certificates — his certificate (if granted) and the one held by his predecessor Susan Luckey, who was appointed interim superintendent from March through June, following the resignation of Jackie Branum.

Many Idahoans have heard of fire restrictions during the summertime, but how decisions to implement restrictions are made, and who makes those calls, has always been a little mysterious.
Fire crews battle area fires
Almost 2,800 acres in the region have been burned in a handful of wildfires, with the largest being the Ridge Creek Fire, roughly 3 1/2 miles east of the northern tip of Hayden Lake. Fire danger in the region is rated as very high to extreme, prompting the implementation of Stage 2 fire restrictions in the state. Under these restrictions, open burning is prohibited, including campfires, stove fires and recreational fires.

Paris to serve 22 years for Smelterville murder
Admitted murderess Stephanie Paris will serve at least the next 22 years in prison following her sentencing earlier this week in Shoshone County. Paris was arrested in June of last year on charges of first-degree murder, failure to notify authorities of a death, and obstruction of justice.

I recently co-led the reintroduction of S. 2431, the Helping Unleash Benefits and Services for Veterans Act, which would streamline access to essential resources for veterans and their families by backing these important hubs in our communities.

It was quite common for a Grange Hall to be used as a gathering place for youth programs, celebrations, parties, weddings, square dances, music, presentations, speakers, classes, and ceremonies. Human remains recovered in remote part of county
The Boundary County Sheriff’s Office received a report that human remains had been discovered in an extremely remote area of northern Boundary County on the evening of July 2, BCSO officials announced in a press release Wednesday.
Fire danger rising quickly in region
As containment of the Consalus Fire increased to 70%, state officials advised that fire danger in most of the state is rated as very high to extreme. As of Tuesday, Idaho Department of Lands crews have fought 166 fires, with most being human-caused or investigated as possibly being human-caused.
Suspect charged in murder and arson case
Suspect has been charged with second degree murder and arson relating to an incident in 2020.

Boundary County School District is collecting donations by way of seat sponsorships for the new grandstands at the Mendenhall Stadium located on the Bonners Ferry High School and Boundary County Middle School campuses.
Super Hunt Deadline is August 10
Super Hunt winners get the best of the best by being able to hunt any open hunt in Idaho for the species they draw. This includes general or controlled hunts, until you tag an animal. Drawings will be held for deer, elk, pronghorn, and moose.
