Anderson helped wtih milfoil problem
To the Editor:
Eurasian milfoil is an invasive menace. Among other things, when Eurasian milfoil mats become dense, they alter water pH, decrease oxygen, and increase water temperature. The stagnant water created by milfoil mats provides good breeding ground for mosquitoes (anyone care for a dose of West Nile virus?). When the milfoil decomposes at the end of the growing season it increases phosphorous and nitrogen in the water. To say that milfoil interferes with recreational activities such as swimming, fishing, and boating, understates the problem. Even strong swimmers can be entangled and drown in milfoil infested waters. Washington State spends $1 million per year in public and private funds to control milfoil. Similar amounts are spent in Minnesota, Wisconsin, New York, and Vermont to control milfoil statewide. For Eric Anderson to obtain $2 million for milfoil control in Boundary and Bonner County is remarkable. The waters of Northern Idaho are a precious resource. Please vote for Eric Anderson and help keep a looming disaster at bay.
