Nelson, Winebark, Mendez score in double digits in loss
Three Bonners Ferry boys scored in double digits during the varsity team's recent 65-55 loss at Lakeland.
Five-foot-8 junior Casey Nelson led with 12 points. Junior Ryan Winebark added 11 and sophomore Miguel Mendez scored 10.
"We didn't match their intensity in the first half, and we had too many turnovers," said head coach Gordon Allured. "They played harder than we did. I talked about that at half-time with the kids. They responded, but got tired."
Lakeland led in the first quarter 19-8 and by half-time, the Badgers were behind 39-23. Bonners Ferry attempted to catch up in the third quarter, scoring 24 points to Lakeland's 15, putting the score at 54-47. Lakeland held onto the lead for the victory, scoring 10 points in the final quarter to Bonners Ferry's 8.
Senior A.J. Bennett, junior Dillon Dietz and Nelson each scored 3-pointers.
Winebark led in defense and offensive rebounds with 6 and 4, respectively. Bennett led with 5 assists and senior Casey Langford added 3. Bennett also led with 4 steals, with Langford adding 3.
Their next game is at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, in Moscow.
