After an exciting season that saw them battle back against the powerhouse Kellogg Wildcats for a berth at state, the Bonners Ferry Badger girls fell one game shy of bringing home a state medal Saturday.

Becky Lowther scored a game-high 17 points and Bonners Ferry outscored Filer 20-2 in the first quarter to win a runaway 3A Girls State Tournament opener Thursday in Middleton.

Lowther was 7 of 10 from the floor for 17 points and 10 rebounds. Katy Poston was 5 of 12 from two-point range and finished with 12 points, five steals and a blocked shot for the Badgers (17-8).

Camille Robertson finished up with six points and nine rebounds. Leanna Kellogg had seven boards and four points.

The Badgers outscored the Wildcats 33-9 in the first half. Jill Haney had a team-high 15 points for Filer (11-10). Becky Lowther led all scorers in their opening game with Filer Thursday, 48-36, while Kellogg, hampered by an untimely bout of flu, dropped into the loser's bracket, falling to the State Champion Sugar-Salem Diggers, 56-38.

BONNERS FERRY — Lowther 7 2-4 17, Kelly 0 2-2 2, Robertson 2 1-5 6, Hiatt 2 1-2 5, Kellogg 2 0-5 4, Winkelseth 0 0-0 0, Tentrault 1 0-0 2, Poston 5 1-2 12. Totals 19-50 7-20 48.

To beat Filer, Lowther lobbed 17 points, and Katie Poston tacked on another 12 to claim a 48-36 win. In their second game, Lowther put up 23 points against Sugar-Salem, but Poston got stuck at three, and the addition of Samantha Kelly's eight points and Camille Robertson's seven weren't enough to bridge the gap, and the Badgers fell, 49-41.

Out of the running for a trophy, the Badgers refused to quit, pinning Declo by a score of 56-43, with Robertson, a junior, stepping into the breach to score 16, while Lowther, fighting to the end of her high school basketball career, put up 15. Sugar-Salem went on to win the 2007 Idaho 3-A title; Shelley came in second, followed by the Badgers at third.
