For the Herald

The 2007 Bonners Ferry Lacrosse Club season is getting underway with the first scheduled meeting held at the Bonners Ferry High School library immediately following school on Jan. 23.

The Bonners Ferry Lacrosse Club will participate in the North Idaho Lacrosse League which also includes Logos Christian School from Moscow, Gonzaga Prep from Spokane, Wash., Lakeland High School Club, Sandpoint High School Club, Coeur d'Alene High School Club, and last years league champion Lake City High School Club.

Last year, the Bonners Ferry Lacrosse Club ended the season with a 2-10 record. Considering that at the beginning of the season only two players had any previous experience playing lacrosse, I believe the club accomplished quit a bit in our first season. One of the highlights was a victory over the 2005 league champs, Gonzaga Prep.

Eleven of last years players have graduated and moved on. I am hoping to have at least 10 players from last year returning to play this year, however, several have expressed concerns about the cost because they have to pay to play.

We will be playing 12 varsity and four JV games this season with jamboree games scheduled the weekend of Mar. 9-11 at Gonzaga Prep, Mar.16-18 at Tri-Cities, Wash., and the middle of April at Coeur d'Alene.

We will carry a squad of 25 players and filling starting positions for attack, midfield, defense and the goalie. This is a great opportunity for the new players as we continue to build the program.

Since lacrosse is not a school sponsored sporting event, this will be a pay to play sport this year. The player's dues are $150 to cover the equipment, referee fees, field rental, field equipment and operational expenses.

We are trying to come up with some creative ways for the community to support the team. We hope to have a fund raising drive, a raffle, and car washes. Some of the players have also express and interest in doing odd jobs such as shoveling snow off sidewalks and driveways to earn extra money to help pay their pay to play dues.

Anyone interest in helping out either financially or volunteering their time, can contact either the head coach John Niewieroski at 208-267-2778, or assistant coach David Brinkman at 208-267-3504.
