As the fourth annual Canine Caper draws near, area residents are prepping themselves and their dogs to participate in the 5K run/walk on Aug. 4 at 10 a.m. Check-in time is between 8-9:45 a.m.

This year's event will begin and end at the Boundary County Fairgrounds with a cost of $10 for each human/dog team, or $15 with a T-shirt, or $5 for individual human. The aid stations along the course will provide water for all entrants.

Although there is no deadline for registration for this year's Canine Caper, there is a July 23 deadline to ensure the availability of T-shirts.

The proceeds from this annual Bonners Ferry Rotary Club sponsored event are donated to the Bonners Ferry City Pound.

Currently, there are five dogs anxiously awaiting new homes, and some of these animals have spent months at the city pound already.

"This event is to not only financially benefit the Bonners Ferry City Pound, but to also bring attention to the much needed improvements," said Debbie Richardson. "After last year's Canine Caper, we have made numerous improvements to provide more to the comfort and well being for the dogs, however, much more is necessary."

Currently there are five wonderful dogs that are anxiously waiting for new homes to call their own.

Richardson added that Second Chance Animal Adoption is providing tremendous support to the event this year, and has also generously helped with some of the medical and food needs of the dogs at the City Pound.

The canine prize categories this year will include first place, prettiest female, most handsome male, smallest, largest, best dressed, most talented, most physically fit and of course, the dog that most resembles its human counterpart.

There will also be numerous drawings for door prizes during the awards ceremony.

And remember, as the flyers say, "Humans accompanied by dogs must be leashed."

"It's all about the dogs, so we encourage everyone to participate," Richardson said. "Check with the City often to see if your "New Best Friend" is waiting for you. Please visit the website to register or for more information www.boundarycountyid.org/caninecaper.htm.
