The Bonners Ferry Herald welcomes a new staff writer and a new member to the community, Elaine Sandman joins the Herald after a 20 year career in the Navy.
"I am thrilled to have Elaine on board and especially happy about her high level of enthusiasm and desire to be in Boundary County," said Managing Editor Kathy Nussberger, "Elaine not only brings the necessary qualifications to the position, but also an honest desire to make Boundary County her home."
Elaine took journalism school through the Navy and eventually created , published, edited and reported on a quarterly newsletter for Navy personnel and the families of NRDNY.
"Before moving to Bonners Ferry just over a week ago, I lived in Reno, Nev., but I knew that Reno was not where I really wanted to live for the long-term. Then while visiting Moses Lake, Wash., I saw the ad for the position here and drove over to interview and fell in love with this area. I now have someplace to call home and where I want to finally put down some roots."
Elaine enjoys horseback riding in both Western and English, writing, hiking, snow skiing, creating DVD movies of all kinds and photography.
Elaine retired from the Navy in August 2004, but during her naval career she worked in a variety of stations.
"My last duty station was with Navy Recruiting District New York (NRDNY) as the Assistant Public Affairs Officer," Elaine said. "One of the highlights of that tour of duty included arranging Navy events in Times Square through the New York Mayor's permit office. My duties also required me to regularly coordinate activities with Port Authority Police and New York's Transit Office, as well as various other city officials throughout New York and Northern New Jersey.
Other duty stations include Scotland onboard the USS Hunley, Alameda, CA onboard the USS Samual Gompers, Navy Recruiting District Portland, Ore., Oahu, Pearl Harbor, Bangor, WA, Fort Meade, MD, Little Creek, VA, Navy Recruiting District New York.
Ports she visited included Sasabo, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Syschells, Subic Bay, Philippines, Diego Garcia.
