When Mt. Hall Community Church decided to do its first free Thanksgiving dinner, John and Kristy Kellogg stepped up to the plate.

The Mt. Hall couple peeled, boiled and mashed 50 pounds of their homegrown potatoes for Saturday's holiday meal.

"It was easy enough," John Kellogg said.

Colleen Culwell, who belongs to the church, suggested the dinner, which parishioners hope will become an annual event for the community and church-goers.

"The Lord put it before me to reach out to the community and feed them," Culwell said.

"We really want to touch some people that don't attend church regularly and have some neighbors come in," added the Rev. Steve Robins, pastor for the church.

The church planned for 150 guests and purchased most of the food

Parishioners made the nine turkeys and three hams at their homes, and donated pies. Many of the side dishes, including sweet potatoes, stuffing, beans and peas were made at the church.

Within the first hour, about 40 came to the dinner.

"I think it's great," Culwell said. "I hope more people come."

Leo and Donna Sanders, who attend functions at the church, appreciated the meal.

"It's wonderful," Donna Sander said. "It's a good meal and a good time to get people together for fellowship."
