Sweeney leads pace for Bonners
Bonners Ferry Boys Cross Country team placed last during Saturday's Silverwood Invite.
At Kellogg, the Badgers took a seventh out of eight teams.
Sophomore Dylan Sweeney led Bonners Ferry in both races. Sweeney took 93rd out of 147 runners at the Silverwood Invite with a run of 19:22. Post Falls Junior Chris Wilson won the race in 18:24.
During the Kellogg Invite,
Sweeney took an eighth-place finish in 18:52.
"Despite the boys' overall placing, I am pleased with how they are learning to race and implement skills that we practice," coach Paul Bonnell said about the Silverwood race. "Their character shows when they run in the large varsity races, despite their relative inexperience."
Lake City won the race with 42 points followed by Borah 68, Capital 121, Lakeside 137, Meridian 181, Shadle Park 203, Kuna 212, Centennial 234, Sandpoint 261, Chewelah 302, Coeur d'Alene 331, Timberlake 336, Post Falls 340, Frenchtown, 363, Medical Lake 363, Moscow 380, Kootenai 414, Kellogg 436, Lakeland 440, Priest River 486 and Bonners Ferry 586.
Other Badger boys who placed were freshman Ben Watt, 112th at 19:56; senior Tyler Warner, 126th at 20:48; freshman Reid Boorman, 135th at 21:35; Chris Wright, 141st at 10:20 p.m.; freshman Nathan Grow, 114th at 11:15; and sophomore Aaron Stockdale, 147th at 25:53.
At Kellogg, Bonnell said he was pleased with the boys' performance.
"It was a great race to observe and watch the team employ basic race fundamentals such as surges, turns and finishing kicks," Bonnell said. "Dylan Sweeney had a remarkable race, running under 19 minutes and employing tactics throughout the 5k course."
Deary won the meet with 63 points followed by Kootenai 80, Lewiston 81, Moscow 82, Newport 99, Kellogg 104, Bonners Ferry 163 and Potlatch 240.
