Girls basketball game goes 2 for 2 in five games

In a matter of five days, Bonners Ferry High School Girls Basketball Team played four games, winning two for a season record of 4-2.

Five-foot-10 senior Ashley Winkelseth and 5-foot-8 junior Erin Hiatt led the Lady Badgers in the 41-39 loss to Timberlake on Tuesday with 11 points each.

“The close games will help us later on in the season,” said coach Travis Hinthorn. “It was not from a lack of effort, the hustle is there. I thought we played pretty well on defense. We didn’t really get a good flow on offense. When we learn to relax and be confident with the ball, we’ll be okay.”

Winkelseth led the team to a 46-44 victory over Newport on Monday with 16 points.

Five-foot-7 senior Alicia Hedrick added 12 points, and Hiatt added six.

“Erin Hiatt hit a free throw with 24 seconds left in the game to give Bonners Ferry their first lead of the game,” said Hinthorn. “It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been ahead. You just need to be ahead at the right time.”

The Lady Badgers had their first loss of the season on Saturday against Moscow, 57-37.

Hedrick led the team with 8 points. Hiatt totaled 7 points.

“We played a much better second half, but the first half was the difference,” Hinthorn said. “We just didn’t play like we usually do in the first half, but we get a chance to play them again at home on Saturday, Dec. 13. We are looking forward to it.”

Winkelseth led the team with 20 points and 6 rebounds for a 63-42 victory over Chewelah Friday.

Alicia Hedrick added 11 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists.

“The girls got off to a great start using the energy from a large crowd for the home opener,” said Hinthorn.
