Bonners Ferry placed third in the Newport Holiday Tournament after defeating Clark Fork 52-44 in the consolation game on Saturday.

The Badgers snapped a three-game losing streak behind the efforts of senior Aaron Hoisington, who led all players with 24 points.

“It’s a win, said Bonners Ferry Head Coach Gordon Allured. “We did an all right job but are still learning to play together.  We executed our full-court press well and that was what seemed to hurt them a bit.”

Wampus Cat senior Jared Broggi scored 20 points with 10 rebounds and Chase Chowning added 12 points and 8 rebounds.

“I thought we did a lot of things better,” said Clark Fork Head Coach Melvin Speelman. “Overall the effort was there with our rebounding and shooting. This game we only became discombobulated once when normally it happens a few times throughout.”

In the initial game, Bonners Ferry lost 61-46 to Priest River. Sophomore Spartan guard Max Salesky had a career night, scoring 22 points, making 6 of 7 from the three-point line.

“We couldn’t stop Max,” Allured said. “We couldn’t deny him the ball and he was on fire.”

Badger senior Dillon Deitz led his team with 16 points and junior Carey Reynolds added 8. Hoisington led in rebounds with 5 and steals with 3.

Priest River Junior Jake Weimer and sophomore Eric Holbrook got the Priest River team in front, hooking up twice before a Holbrook steal and coast-to-coast score to take an early 13-8 lead.

It was the end of the first and five minutes of the second quarter where Salesky went off hitting five ‘three-balls’ and scored 17 points in the six-minute span.

Behind the hot hand and some solid defense, Priest River busted out to a 36-18 lead. Fellow sophomore guard Tyler Douglas scored on a drive and followed up with another hoop and a foul to allow the Spartans to take a 40-29 lead into the half.

Priest River extended the lead to 17 only allowing the Badgers 6 points in the third.

Bonners Ferry guard Derek Deitz cut his team’s deficit to single digits, 52-43 by the four-minute mark of the fourth. The Badger senior used his speed and aggression to get to the hoop and score.  Priest River called time out and regrouped going into clock management spreading the floor and working the ball around.

The patience paid dividends when senior Brian Nelson back-cut his man and completed a three-point play with the basket and foul.

The momentum was regained and the Spartans went on to win 61-46.

Bonners Ferry will host Moscow on Jan. 13.
