Dorothy 'Dottie' Haynes Harrell, 66
After a one-year battle with cancer, former Bonners Ferry resident Dorothy 'Dottie' Haynes Harrell, 66, passed away on Sunday, July 6, 2008, at her home in Spokane, Wash.
Dottie was born Jan. 12, 1942, in Bonners Ferry to John and Rita Foust. She was their third child.
Dottie grew up in the timber industry and was very involved with 4-H, school activities and life in Bonners Ferry.
She graduated from Bonners Ferry High School in 1960.
Dottie married Donald Haynes. The two met at a local ice cream shop where Dottie worked.
The couple had four children, and Dottie helped on their 80-acre farm, tending to animals, helping with hay and cooking meals for the haying crew.
She grew most of their vegetables, canning them, and loved to sew, bake and cook.
Dottie was very active in her family's life, including being involved with 4-H and as a room mother at school. She also helped her husband in the logging and brush piling business, even running skidder for him on a few occasions.
Dottie worked for several elderly people, cleaning, painting and helping where she could.
Dottie was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church. In 1979, she became manager of the Before and After Shop, an infant, children's and maternity store in Bonners Ferry. Dottie worked alongside her daughter, Lisa, at the shop.
Dottie's husband passed away in March 1980.
In May 1981, she married Jeff Harrell of Whittier, Calif. That November, he was stationed in Brindisi, Italy, with the Navy. They remained there for 18 months with Dottie's sons, Randy and Terry.
After Jeff was transferred to San Diego, Dottie took a job with Broadway Department Store and then the Social Security Administration.
In 1994, she transferred to the Social Security Administration office in Spokane, where Dottie remained until her retirement due to her illness.
She was a member of Assumption Catholic Church in Spokane.
Dottie will be remembered for her wonderful smile, friendliness and love for people, especially her family. She was a hard worker and enjoyed working with others.
Dottie was a gifted seamstress, cook and gardener. She had the ability to take on any challenge and do it well.
Dottie had a nurturing love for the many pets and farm animals in her care. She enjoyed telling children and grandchildren stories about growing up in Bonners Ferry and her days with classmates, friends and family.
Dottie enjoyed sharing stories about dressing up and going to proms and dances, being fair princess and the fun she had with friends at Devil's Tower rope swing at Jimmy Hopkins' place on Van Buren Street, where Dottie's daughter, Lisa, and her family live.
Dottie enjoyed huckleberry and morel mushroom picking, swimming and the outdoors.
She was a strong woman with a big heart. Dottie was very competitive in the game of Rummy, especially when it came to playing with her daughter, granddaughter and daughter-in-law, Parri.
Dottie was present and shared in the joy of her only granddaughter's birth ' Jessica Dawn in 1991.
Dottie's heart was broken after her youngest son, Terry, died in April 2002.
Survivors include Dottie's husband in Spokane; sons Anthony Haynes and his wife, Penny, of Buffalo, Wyo., and Randy Haynes and his wife, Parri, of Littleton, Colo.; daughter Lisa West and her husband, Tim, of Bonners Ferry; grandchildren Casey, David and Jessica West, and Donnie, Spencer, Colton, Dustin and Christopher Haynes; great-granddaughter, Kaylee West; a sister, Bev Shaw and her husband, Don, of Libby, Mont., sister-in-law Judy Foust of Cashmere, Wash.; numerous nieces, nephews and relatives; friends; and co-workers at the Social Security Administration Office.
Dottie was preceded in death by her parents, first husband, stepfather George Koppang, son Terry Foust and her brother, Jack Foust.
A Rosary will be held 7 p.m. Friday, July 18, at Assumption Catholic Church at 3624 West Indian Trail Road in Spokane. A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, July 19, at the church with a reception following at Dottie's home at 7503 N. Tolt Court, Spokane.
