Megan Havercroft faces two firsts this fall with Boun-dary County School District.

The 2005 University of Idaho graduate will begin her first full-time teaching job and is getting her first shot as a head softball coach. Havercroft will teach social studies at Bonners Ferry High School and coach the Lady Badgers in the spring.

“I love softball and am looking forward to building a program and seeing improvement,” she said.

High school athletic director Ted Reynolds is also pleased.

“We’ve never had a softball coach that had high school coaching experience,” Reynolds said.

“Her experience and knowledge of the game was very impressive in the interview.”

He also likes that Havercroft will be a teacher.

“She’ll know the kids,” Reynolds said. “When you see the kids every day, you can monitor their grades and help them with other issues. Having that daily contact with the kids is definitely a bonus.”

Havercroft for four years has served as an assistant coach for Lakeland and Potlach high schools. A graduate of Lakeland High School in Rathdrum, she played second base and outfield for the Hawks softball team. During her four years with the team, the Hawks took three trips to the state tournament. In 2001, Havercroft’s team won the Class 4A state title.

Havercroft will replace former Badger head coach Linda Ekstrom, who resigned after the spring season, when the girls posted one win, Reynolds said.
