Let truth be known

| March 7, 2008 8:00 PM

I believe the community needs to know the truth  in regards to offering the Bible curriculum as an elective in our school district.

The article in our Feb. 21 newspaper states that it would cost the district $50,000 for a teacher to teach this curriculum. This is not true.

The community members and students that have been asking to have the Bible curriculum as an elective in the high school, have never asked for it to be a full-time teaching position, therefore it would not cost the district $50,000.

Actually it would be a blessing if the class was just offered one period a day. The school district might also be surprised to hear there are probably teachers inhouse that would love to teach this class.

Another important truth the public needs to know is that 60 students in our area have signed a petition stating that they want this class offered as an elective.

I worked for a school district in Washington for 10 years, and every spring we would survey the students to see what electives they were  interested in. We would then take the  most popular electives and the core classes and build a schedule.

If we have the students, and we don't need to hire a new teacher, then it looks like all we need to do is  add this elective to our schedule. I hope the school board will consider these truths when they are making their decision about the Bible curriculum.
