Bob and Etta Mae Schnuerle on Feb. 16 hosted the first of what is hoped to be an annual Bonners Ferry Potluck at their home in Wenden, Ariz.

Local snowbirds came from Yuma, Sun City, Lake Havesu, Phoenix, Salome, Wickenberg, Aguila, Quartzsite, Brenda and more.

The day was spent visiting and eating.

Next year's get-together will be Feb. 18. Anyone interested in attending should call 267-8983.

The Schnuerles also had some other visitors two weeks ago from Bonners Ferry. They were Collins and Wanda LeFebvre, Jim and Carol Nystrom and Thea Cossairt, who are staying in Parker, Ariz.

A week ago, Bonners Ferry residents spending the winter in Quartzsite met the Schnuerles for a four-wheeler ride. They were Glenn and Carol Belden, Carol Mesenbrink, and Dave and Louise Cheevers.

Dena Cook, Celia Knott and Lynne Urfer recently spent 10 days in Puerto Morelos, Mexico.

Most days were spent at the beach with a little snorkeling.

“We had a lot of fun,” Dena said. “We spent one day at an echo park, rode bikes, swam in a cenote - a hole in the ground under big trees - and rode a zip line, which was the biggest hit.”

Former resident Ilona Rosengrant recently ran into Barb and Cal Russell in Hawaii.

A 2002 Bonners Ferry High School graduate, Ilona works as a nanny for a family with two children in Hawaii. Before going to Hawaii, she was a waitress at Jill's Cafe for nearly three years. Ilona is the daughter of Brent and Gina Rosengrant of Bonners Ferry.

Boundary County Realtor Donna Capurso is heading to Las Vegas Sunday. Owner of Selkirk Mountain Real Estate in Bonners Ferry, Capurso will be working with a company that designs exams for national certification in real estate sales. She will advise PSI on subject content, relevancy and changes in the law.

Capurso did similar work for another such firm in Philadelphia last April.

Bonners Books in downtown Bonners Ferry has a relatively new cat. A customer gave Magpie to store owner John O'Connor about one year after Gypsy died at age 19 1/2 in the fall of 2005. Gypsy had lived in the store her entire life.

While Gypsy was all black, Magpie is almost all black with the exception of a white star.

Former Bonners Ferry mayor Darrell Kerby and his wife, Patty, did a wonderful thing for Boundary County Middle School. When a student from Badger Paws asked the Kerbys to buy an advertisement for the school newspaper in their attempt to buy a camera, the Kerbys chose to buy them the camera. The couple gave the newspaper $400.

“We support the kids in every way that we can,” Darrell Kerby said. “They are our future and we need to support children and their education.”

The school showed its appreciation by thanking the Kerbys during its basketball pep rally on Feb. 29

“We were very excited,” said middle school principal Dick Behrens.

Amy Cowley is the advisor for Badger Paws, which comes out every two to three weeks.
