Time to run for school board
Many people see problems around every corner. Some are justified with facts, and some are figments of their imagination.
Over the last year, (actually longer than that), there have been many letters to the editor regarding the Boundary County School District and its board. Many times these letters just want clarification on what has been going on and how best to resolve an issue.
Other times it has been personal attacks. I am not sure how many individuals of our community take the time to attend school board meetings, but I have attended quite a few during the past year. It is my experience that there is always room for improvement.
School District Zone 1 (Canadian border to Three-Mile area) and Zone 2 (Moyie Springs from Three-Mile to Montana border) are up for re-election. Check out the map at www.bcsd101.com/zone_map.htm to see what zone you are in.
If you are in one of these two zones and feel there is a need for change within our school district, then I encourage you to run for one of the two, three-year volunteer positions. The only way to make things change is to become involved.
I applaud Donna Capurso for stepping up to the plate and announcing her plan to run for Zone 2 Trustee. Are there any others who wish to run?
If you are interested in more information about the school district and the board, then check out Boundary County School District's Policy Manual that recently was posted on their Web site www.bcsd101.com/policy_manual/policy.htm.
You have until April 18 to register for one of the upcoming positions on the Boundary County School Board. Again, this is the only way things will change. People need to get involved, even if it is just to vote.
I encourage each of you, regardless of which zone you reside in, to call your school board representative and share with them your views. They are your representatives, and your concerns should be their business.
If our elected representatives, from local volunteer boards to officials in Washington, D.C., do not know specifically how we feel, then how can they honestly represent us?
If you feel strongly about something, then get involved. This goes not only for school boards, but other groups as well. We have several great veterans and auxiliary organizations in Boundary County. There are community groups such as Rotary and the Chamber of Commerce.
Check out our county's Web site on volunteer boards at www.boundarycountyid.org/commission/boards.htm.
There are also rural fire departments that need volunteers, not only to fight fires, but individuals to serve on their boards.
We need to give a standing ovation to all those who have stepped up to the plate to volunteer over so many years. It's time we all get involved and do more to help share this volunteer load. This is what makes our community great!
