Greetings from Eastport.

The sun is out and so are the motorcycles and rag-top convertibles. You can tell people are happy by the bugs on their teeth.

We’ve gotten reports that the fish are biting in the Moyie River. In fact, Maurice Brakeman stopped by to show us his 18 1/2-inch, 2-pound rainbow trout that he caught with a worm. It was a beauty.

Speaking of wild animals, Bob Dante had a visitor on his ranch in the Round Prairie area the other day. He found a 400-pound grizzly bear feeding on a carcass in his field.

The LoPorto family had a party at the Good Grief on April 27 to celebrate Sam LoPorto’s 90th birthday. In attendance were four generations including Sam and JoAnne LoPorto; Kathy and Mike Young with their children and grandchildren Becky, Dave, Bethanie and Rachael Young; Patti and Les Richardson with their gang Julie, Tyler and Alisa Hannaman; Jenna and Brian Davis with Natalie and Terry; Joe LoPorto, who took time out from his studies; Curtis Clausen, who is in the U.S. Navy and newly assigned in Bremerton; and friends Joni and Roger Branscom, and Adam Connell.

After lunch, all enjoyed the sunshine on the deck, and a black forest cake that Kathryn Ray made especially for Sam — no, she didn’t put 90 candles on it.

Speaking of social occasions, on April 26, the “Mountain Ladies” met at Feist Creek Resort for lunch and camaraderie. Those attending were Pat Beck, Patty Richardson, Kathy Young, JoAnne LoPorto, Robin Young, Audrey Howe, Linda Tanaka, Esther Rothwell, Bev Gowan, Lois Weakly, Laurie Lowther, Grace Aby, Patricia Doherty, Judy Wier and Linda Corson. It’s great to see all these neighbors get together to socialize.

Judy Weir is nursing her broken arm after tripping over a twig while walking in the woods. All Joey Dog wanted to do was play with the stick, but had some trouble getting it out from under Judy. I guess we can’t call him a “rescue” dog. We wish you a speedy recovery.

Now to business. Will the person who borrowed Wilma Higgens’ back blade from her tractor please return it. Her son bought it and would like to pick it up.

Also, the newsletter and membership form for Hall Mountain Volunteer Fire Association has been sent. Be prompt in returning dues, and be sure to attend the annual meeting beginning with a free pancake breakfast cooked by firefighters at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 17.

Okay, all you fast draw fans. The Good Grief Gang, sponsored by Sharpshooter Bill Sills, is having a Cowboy Fast Draw competition at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 24, at Good Grief Grill. All are welcome for this fun and safe sport using wax bullets.

Shooting is done in pairs as a timed event. You don’t have to be good, just want to have a good time.

Trudy Day and Kathryn Ray co-own Good Grief Cafe. To submit information to their column, send a e-mail to goodgrief@netscape.com, or stop by the restaurant.
