Bus drivers can't break law

| November 3, 2008 8:00 PM

This is in regard to the article written about school bus safety week.

A bus driver wrote to inform us about laws we are to obey. Aren't there laws that school bus drivers have to obey also?

I have witnessed plenty of times buses leaving both the high school and junior high school on Highway 95 without stopping at the stop sign. If a northbound car or pickup driver is nice enough to allow one bus driver to turn north, not one, but two, maybe three or more buses pull through without stopping at that stop sign.

And it is not limited to bus drivers that exit without stopping, its students and parents picking up the students. Don't they need to obey the stop sign?

I'm sure it is happening at other stop signs where there are numerous buses and cars exiting at the same time. Maybe the bus drivers, parents and students all need a refresher course about what the stop sign is for. It means stop.

My husband and I have talked to a state highway patrol officer about this and we were informed that the bus drivers do indeed need to stop at the stop sign. Even if the person is flagging them through, they still need to stop.

So please remember that we all have laws that we need to obey when we are driving during and after school bus safety week. This will help everyone to achieve safer driving conditions and maintain a safety record.
