Girls soccer team takes fifth during state tournament in Caldwell
Bonners Ferry High School Girls Soccer Team placed fifth at the Idaho 3A Region 1 State Championship on Friday and Saturday at Vallivue High School in Caldwell. The Lady Badgers finished the season with a league record of 9-2-1 and an overall record of 11-9-1.
Two overtime periods and a double shoot-out in 100-plus minutes of actual field play in the first game resulted in the Lady Badgers defeating Teton 2-1. Teton was last year’s state champion.
Badger Kira Wasmer made the first goal at the 13th minute and was followed by Teton scoring two minutes later.
Bonners Ferry had 10 shots-on-goal to Teton’s 11. Keeper Sam Schmitz collected 9 saves.
“This was a wonderful team effort,” said coach John Lindberg.
The Lady Badgers dropped their second game to Shelly High School in a repeat of the double overtime game that took place 20 hours earlier. Another 100 minutes of soccer with an overtime shoot-out saw Shelly defeat the Badgers 2-1.
Emily Pauls tied the game at the 60th minute, and the next 20 minutes plus an additional 20 minutes of overtime came to a shoot-out climax with Shelly making 3 of 5 to the Badgers 2 of 5.
“Tremendous Badger supporters witnessed a super match,” said Lindberg.
The Badger girls dropped the third-place playoff game to Payette High School.
Allison Dudis tied the game 1-1 at the 11th minute. Payette scored the next two goals at the 70th and 79th minute of play.
“Tired legs, but a continuous high team effort by the Badgers earned a high praise from the game’s officials,” said Lindberg.
Brianna Watt earned the assist on Dudis’ goal.
The Badgers had 9 shots-on-goal to Payette’s 12.
Schmitz once again played a world-class game as keeper by deflecting and saving 10 shots-on-goal to Payette’s 8 saves, according to Lindberg.
“This game was very physical and the Badgers played through in very high sportsmanship,” said Lindberg.
