Badger boys defeat Libby, Lakeland
Bonners Ferry Boys Soccer team defeated Libby 3-1 on Tuesday, bumping its overall record to 9-4-2, while they remain undefeated with a 4-0 record in the Intermountain League.
“It was another good game,” said coach Wayne Wilkerson. “They are a very good team.”
In other action, the Badgers tied Lakeland 1-1 during a non-league game on Monday.
“It was very exciting,” said Wilkerson.
The boys defeated Orofino 6-1 Saturday.
Miguel Mendez scored his 13th and 14th goals of the season, the first of an assist from Jody Wilkerson. The second was a 20-yard rocket that froze the goalkeeper to give the Badgers a 2-0 lead at the half.
Bonners kept up the pressure in the second half with freshman Andre Zarate scoring the next two goals. The first was off an assist from Wilkerson and the second compliment was from sophomore Aaron Moe to pad the lead to 5-0 with 20 minutes remaining.
Freshman Daniel Palacios scored his third goal of the season in the 64th minute with an assist from Mendez. Junior defender Carey Reynolds finished off a nice run with his first career goal off a nifty through pass from sophomore Mat Evans to complete the Badgers scoring.
In other action, senior defender John Wakkinen headed in a Zarate corner kick with just one minute remaining to help the Badgers tie St. George 2-2 on Sept. 23 at home. Bonners opened the scoring in the 26th minute with senior Mike Strapelli scoring off a Miguel Mendez assist.
The last five minutes saw Bonners Ferry attack relentlessly until finally getting Wakkinen’s score.
Bonners Ferry closes out its home season at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, with Priest River. It is also Senior Day. The District tournament will be held Oct. 10 adn 11 at Post Falls High School.
