Bonners Ferry Badgers got on the scoreboard quickly against St. Maries at home on Friday, but it would be their only trip to the end zone as the Lumberjacks capitalized on Badger errors to dominate the game for a 27-6 win.

Badger quarterback Rob Gust broke into the end zone midway through the first quarter on a six-yard keeper, but the kick failed, putting the Badgers up 6-0.

St. Maries answered on the opening drive of the second, when Ryan Huddleston rambled 82 yards to the end zone. Derek Tweedy punched in again for the conversion, putting the ‘Jacks ahead 8-6.

A few plays later, Jake Szilasi intercepted a Gust pass at the Badger 18; Jaden Guidry rambled in for the touchdown. The two-point conversion failed, putting the Lumberjacks ahead 14-6 at the half.

In the third quarter, the ‘Jacks recovered a Gust fumble on their own 47-yard line. Huddleston moved the ball to the Badger 20-yard line on three runs, then Szilasi moved it the rest of the way to stretch the lead. Marc Grubham tacked on the point after to make the score 21-6.

It was another fumble recovery that set up the final score of the game in the fourth, and again it was Huddleston piling up the yardage and Szilasi moving in for the score. Grubham’s second field goal attempt bounced off the upright, putting the score 27-6.

The Badgers appeared to finally be on the move late in the fourth when Gust launched a pass to Ryan Wilson, who went 72 yards to the St. Marie’s one-yard line, but back-to-back fouls moved the Badgers back, and Gust was sacked as time ran out.
