Smith honest public servant, listens to concerns

| October 16, 2008 9:00 PM

I have known Ron Smith for many years, as a neighbor, as sheriff and as county commissioner, and he is one of the most open and honest public servants this county has ever had, always available to hear people’s concerns and to work towards an acceptable resolution to some very tough problems.

As county commissioner, he has always welcomed public participation in matters to be dealt with, and while the answers reached may not always be the ones everyone wants to hear, they are always well researched and well thought out, and prove out to be best for everyone involved.

I’ve known him to take phone calls at any time, and he’s always in touch with the office. I have never seen him refuse to discuss an issue unless he’s bound not to by law.

Outside the commissioner’s office, he is a model citizen of this community, and an active one. You’ll find him at nearly every Badger game. When the opportunity came to bring a North Idaho College campus to Bonners Ferry, and when the community stood to lose its Head Start program, he got involved, both as a commissioner and as a citizen, to ensure county students have the best opportunities available.

Ron Smith is a proven open and honest public leader who has given much to serve his community. He deserves the opportunity to continue doing what he has done so well.
