Spreading the Word
Friends of the Arts held its annual meeting on Sunday in the Memorial Hall at Boundary County Fairgrounds.
Some of the non-profit group’s upcoming performances include the AM String Band from Helena, Mont., on Sunday, Nov. 9; “The Nutcracker” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, with Eugene Ballet Co.; Missoula Children’s Theatre’s Rumpelstiltskin at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21; The Bottom Line Duo at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 21; and “Bye, Bye Birdie” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 4.
All shows are in Becker Auditorium at Bonners Ferry High School except the AM String Band, which will perform in Memorial Hall.
To raise money for the current season, Friends of the Arts is selling raffle tickets. They are $5 each or five for $20.
Prizes include a dog sled tour with True North Expeditions valued at $250, a Curve’s membership valued at $250, a scenic one-hour plane tour of Boundary County valued at $125, a professional portrait by photographer by Jerry Pavia valued at $400, and two adult one-day lift tickets for Sweitzer Mountain Resort valued at $110.
Tickets will be available at the AM String Band Dinner/Dance, the Farmer’s Market Holiday Fair on Sat., Nov. 22, and the Nutcracker .

• For the first time in more than 40 years, David Koon doesn’t have to wear glasses.
David underwent lens transplant surgery at Spokane Eye Clinic. The 44-year-old Bonners Ferry native had one eye done on Sept. 21 and the second on Oct. 2. The surgery involves putting permanent contacts in both eyes.
“I think it’s great,” David said about not having to wear glasses — something he started doing at age 3.
The surgery took under two hours and each eye takes about a month to heal. David still wears his glasses to read fine print.
• Registered nurse Elaine Atkins will have some company when she goes to the home Bonners Ferry Junior Varsity football game at 6 p.m. today against Kellogg. Her name is Jane.
Jane is a mannequin provided by American Cancer Society to promote smoking cessation and the Great American Smokeout on Nov. 20 — a day when smokers are asked not to smoke for 24 hours.
Elaine and Jane will distribute handouts with tips on how to quit smoking and direct smokers to free help. On Friday, Oct. 17, Elaine and Jane will make stops at Boundary Trading Co. and Safeway.
• Sixteen days after her 16th birthday, Amanda Johnson made her first solo flight from Boundary County Airport. Johnson celebrated her 17th birthday on Sept. 26 by getting her pilot’s license.
Seventeen is the minimum age one is allowed to get a pilot’s license. Amanda began flying at age 15.
She is the daughter of Shem and Margo Johnson.
• Rob Tompkins of Bonners Ferry took second and Rodney LePoidevin, also of Bonners Ferry, took third place during a lawnmower race on Oct. 4 in Potlach.
