Hiatt takes 1st place at Kellogg Invitational
Bonners Ferry junior Erin Hiatt won the girls race for the invitational in Kellogg with a time of 21:27, helping the Lady Badgers to a second-place finish.
For the boys, junior Dylan Sweeney ran a personal best of 17:17 and took second place overall. The Badger team also took second overall in Kellogg.
During Saturday's invitational in Post Falls, Hiatt finished fifth and Sweeney took fourth.
“Both teams again showed that despite their youth, they can prove to be tough competitors,” coach Paul Bonnell said about both meets.
At Kellogg, senior Molly McClintock, who ran a 21:32, contended with Deary's Jenna MacPherson and Moscow's Elizabeth Noelson, but held both to go one and two after a smart race of front-running.
Sophomore Lorena LaBarbera placed 17th with a run of 24:40. Senior Riley Boorman finished right behind LaBarbera with a 24:41. Amy Elliott came in 23rd at 25:54, while freshmen Katy Hiatt ran a 27:07 and Katrina Svec completed the race in 27:12 for 28th and 29th place, respectively.
In the girls junior varsity, seniors Katie Winebark took eighth at 28:27, Cassie Stephens placed ninth with a run of 31:11 and Ami Dittman took 11th with a run of 31:42. All ran personal record times.
In the boys Kellogg race, Sweeney was on Deary's Quinn MacPherson's heels.
Freshman Jimmy Matthews held off Priest River's Ryan Ewing to finish fourth in 17:46.
“Freshman talent and tenacity proved itself in Zach Hammond and Micah Krmpotich, who both ran under 19 minutes and finished in the top 15 in the field of 51,” Bonnell said.
Hammond placed 13th with a run of 18:51 and Krmpotich took 14th with a 18:56. Reid Boorman finished 32nd with 21:07, while sophomore Nathan Grow ran a personal best of 23:24 and place 43rd.
Moscow boys and girls won both races in Kellogg. For the boys, Kellogg had 56 points followed by Bonners Ferry 60, Lewiston 79, Kellogg 116, Deary 124, Potlatch 183, and Troy 199.

At Post Falls, the Badgers' hill workouts paid off on the course that makes three hilly, twisting loops around Kiwanis Park, Bonnell said.
