Bonners Ferry broke a late fourth-quarter tie on a five-play, 65-yard march down field to defeat Kettle Falls, Wash., 21-13 on Friday.

Junior quarterback Robby Gust carried the ball 35 yards before senior receiver Javi Sale scored on a three-yard run to break a 13-13 tie with 1:11 remaining in the non-league game. Sale sealed the victory after running in for the two-point conversion.

In other highlights, Gust scored the Badgers’ first touchdown on a 65-yard run.

“It was obviously nice to get a victory at home,” head coach Ed DePriest said. “It kind of set a tone for the season.”

The Badgers are 1-1 for the season and will travel to Newport on Friday, Sept. 19, for a 7 p.m. non-league game.

Bonners Ferry scored its first touchdown with 4:53 left in the first quarter on Gust’s 65-yard run. Junior Colton Telford made the kick, putting Bonners Ferry in the lead 7-0.

During the Badgers’ third possession, Sale completed 15- and 7-yard runs before scoring on a 7-yard run with 25 seconds left in the first quarter. The kick failed, and the Badgers led 13-0.

Senior running back Jake Ellison scored first for the Bulldogs on a 31-yard run with 7:06 left in the third quarter. The kick was good, making the score 13-7.

With 3:44 remaining in the game, the Bulldogs recovered a Bonners Ferry fumble on the Badgers’ 8-yard line. The Bulldogs scored from the 2-yard mark with 2:37 left in the game. Kettle Falls’ attempt at the 2-point conversion failed, making the score 13-13.

The Badgers then started a drive from their own 35. Sale made 17-yard and 3-yard runs before Gust carried the ball for 6 and 35 yards, setting up Sale for the score.

DePriest told the guys the rest of the season remains wide open.

“If you look at what the other teams have been doing. . . ,” he said. “If we practice well, focus well and are disciplined, we have as good a chance as everyone else.”
