Hiatt running her way to first-place finishes

Bonners Ferry junior Erin Hiatt grabbed nine first-place awards during four track meets in five days, including winning the 800-meter run during the Interstate Rivals Meet in Central Valley, Wash.

Schools competing in Saturday’ invitational included Central Valley, Lakeland, Colville, Freeman, Timberlake, Bonners Ferry, Priest River and Valley Christian.

In dual meets at home Thursday, Hiatt won the 800-meter run, long jump, 300 hurdles and 1600-meter run against Priest River and Timberlakd. For Hiatt, it was debut appearance in long jump and hurdles, said coach Travis Hinthorn.

“She had her Junior Miss interview and (when she go to the meet) the pole vault was done,” Hinthorn said.

Since Hiatt missed the pole vault, she tried the log jump and won it by a few feet, said Hinthorn, who believes Hiatt could qualify for five to six events when it comes time for the state track meet.

“She has a chance of winning the 800,” Hinthorn said.

The girls defeated Priest River 80-51 and lost to Timberlake 94-48. Alicia Hedrick won the shot put and discuss against Timberlake. Hedrick also won the discuss against Priest River.

Against Priest River, Amy Andrews won the 200- and 400-meter runs and was part of the winning 1600-meter relay. Jessica Merz won the high jump and was on the winning 1600 relay team.

 Individual winners were Kaitlyn Rice in the triple jump, and Loreno LaBarbera and Amy Elliott in the 1600 meter relay.

The Badgers’ 800-meter relay team of Meg Newell, Natasha Finnigan, Amy Andrews and Olivia Langs won against Timberlake and Priest River in 2:02.01.

For the boys, Jimmy Matthews won the 3200- and 1600-meter runs and Brandon Ratcliff won the shot put and discuss. Individual winners were Rock Stapley in the 100, Dylan Sweeney in the 800 and Jacob Callister in the 400.

The Badgers won the 800-meter relay against Timberlake and Priest River. Team members Blake Skjeveland, Ben Horton, Callister and Watt, 1:39.1.

Also against Priest River, Watt won the 110- and 330-meter hurdles. Callister won the 400- and 200-meter runs. Individuals winners were Rock Stapley in the long jump, and Taylor Tompke in the pole vault.

The boys 1600-meter relay team also won. Members were Skjeveland, Sweeney, Callister and Watt.
