Nelson Throws Gem as Badgers beat PFJV

Bonners Ferry Baseball Team evened its record to 4-4 as senior captain Casey Nelson pitched a gem, beating Post Falls junior varsity team 6-2.

Nelson (1-0) pitched 5 innings giving up only two hits, no runs, striking out 5 and not walking any batters.  Greg Taggart and Zack Roberts pitched the sixth and seventh innings to finish the game.

“Our pitching staff didn’t give up a single walk today.  That’s a great job pitching,” Coach Tom Turpin said.

The Badgers struck for 2 runs in the bottom of the second when junior Zach Maas started the inning off with a single to left.  C.J. Erickson followed with a single and Maas scored on a bases loaded walk to Colton Telford.  Erickson later scored on a sacrafice fly from sophomore Alek Lopez.

The Badgers added 3 more runs in the third when junior Alex Kellogg reached on an error and Zack Roberts hit a single to left field.  Maas hit an RBI double to score Kellogg, and then Erickson hit his first career homerun to deep left field.

“That’s one of the longest homeruns I’ve seen here, especially into the wind,” Turpin said.     Bonners Ferry added an insurance run in the fourth inning when Senior Aaron Hoisington reached on an error and later scored.

Post Falls JV got 2 runs in the seventh when Erickson misplayed a hit to right, followed by an RBI double from Benner and single from Lickfold.

Maas finished the game with 2 hits, including a double and Erickson went 2 for 3 with a 2-run homer.

Senior pitcher Greg Taggart struggled through 3 innings, giving up all 7 runs while walking 3 and hitting 4 batters.  Taggart was relieved by junior Zack Roberts in the fifth inning and Roberts shut down the young Timberwolves allowing only 2 hits and striking out 8 batters.

The Badgers scored for 3 runs in the fifth inning when Junior CJ Erickson started the inning off with a single to left.  Alek Lopez and Colton Telford both walked to load the bases and Alex Kellogg hit a 2 run single to score Erickson and Lopez.  Teflord later scored on a pitchers balk.

In the 6 inning, the Badgers added 2 more runs to go ahead 8-7 when Erickson reached on an error and Lopez walked for the third time in the game.  Both scored on Telford 2 run double down the right field line.

In the seventh inning, Bonners Ferry added 3 more runs when Casey Nelson started the inning off with a single followed by a walk to Kellogg.  Roberts hit a 2-run double to score both Nelson and Kellogg, and Roberts later scored on a sacrifice fly from Zach Maas.
