BADGERS SWEEP WILDCATS IN BASEBALL

The Badgers erupted for 28 total hits and 21 runs in a sweep over Intermountain League Opponent Kellogg Wildcats.

The Badgers defeated the Wildcats what in the first game and 11-4 in the second. Bonners Ferry (9-5 overall, 4-3 league) plays at Timberlake on Saturday.

In the first game, senior Casey Nelson (2-0) won his second game of the year pitching five strong innings and junior Alex Kellogg pitched the final two. Nelson and Kellogg combined to allow 4 hits in the game.

Nelson held the Wildcats hitless through the first four and a third innings until Kyle Kenser hit a run scoring double off the fence. The only other hit off Nelson came in the fifth inning.

Bonners Ferry struck for one run in the first inning when Aaron Hoisington reached on an error from the second baseman and later scored on a passed ball. The Badgers added another run in the third inning when Zack Roberts started off with a single to left and later scored on Robby Burns RBI double.

 In the fourth inning, Bonners Ferry erupted for eight runs on five hits with Greg Taggart starting the inning off with a single to left. After Alek Lopez walked, Hoisington loaded the based reaching on an error from the pitcher.

C.J. Erickson hit a two-run single scoring Taggart and Lopez. Zach Maas later hit a RBI single scoring Hoisington and Nelson hit a two-run single scoring Erickson and Burns. Kellogg then ripped a RBI single to score Maas and Lopez came up again in the inning and scored Nelson.

Kellogg came back and scored three runs in the fifth inning and a final run in the seventh inning.  The Badgers finished with 12 hits with Roberts, Nelson and Lopez each getting two hits.  Every batter in the line up contributed with a hit in the game.

Game two saw the Badgers start off with three runs and five hits in the first inning on their way to a 11–4  victory. Taggart got his first win of the season pitching three strong innings.  Roberts pitched in relief giving up one run on justthree hits.

Hoisington got things started with a single followed by a RBI double from Roberts. Burns then scored Roberts on a RBI single. After Taggart hit a single, Nelson scored Burns with a RBI single. The Badgers added two more runs in the third inning when Roberts reached on an error and Burns got his second consecutive hit.  Taggart then stroked a single scoring both Roberts and Burns. 

With the Badgers leading 5–4 in the top of the fifth, Bonners Ferry added four more runs with Erickson starting the inning off with his second home run of the season. Roberts then lined a single to left followed by Burns’ double.

Nelson singled in Roberts and Kellogg hit a double to deep left to score Burns and Nelson. The Badgers added two more runs in the seventh inning when Nelson hit a RBI double and Kellogg hit his second double of the game scoring Nelson.

Hoisington, Taggart, Lopez and Kellogg each had three hits on the day while Roberts and Burns had four hits. Nelson ended the day with five hits, four RBI and three runs scored.

Awbrey improves record to 2–0

The Badger baseball team improved its overall record to 7-5 with a 4–2 victory over Lake City junior varsity as freshman Alex Awbrey improved his record to 2–0.

Awbrey pitched five strong innings giving up only one run while allowing just three hits, striking out three and walking one.  Three days earlier, Awbrey won his first high school baseball game.

The Badgers scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning when Casey Nelson started off the inning with a walk and Alex Kellogg then singled to right to put runners on first and second.  Aaron Hoisington then hit a double to score Nelson.  Lake City then had three errors in the inning scoring both Kellogg and Hoisington.  Bonners Ferry added one more run in the fifth when Nelson reached on an error and later scored on Alek Lopez’s sacrifice fly to center.

Senior Robby Burns relieved Awbrey and pitched the final two innings giving up one run on two hits.

Freshman

Freshman Alex Awbrey took to the mound last Friday for the first time in his career and recorded his first victory as a Badger pitcher. 

Awbrey pitches three strong innings to record 13–1 victory

Awbrey pitched three innings, giving up just three hits and allowing one run.  He struck out the first batter to start the game then gave up a run in the first. 

After that, Awbewy shut down the Miners in the next two innings.  Junior Alex Kellogg pitched the fourth inning and senior Joe Morton pitched the final fifth inning.

The Badgers started the scoring in the first when Casey Nelson hit a single and later scored on a passed ball.  Bonners Ferry scored six runs in the third inning when CJ Erickson hit a single to start the inning followed by a RBI double from Zack Roberts.

Roberts finished the game going 3-for-3 with two doubles.

BADGERS SPLIT WITH JACKS

Roberts throws gem in 6 -2 victory

Bonners Ferry junior Zack Roberts struck out 16 batters while giving up only one walk and four hits in the 6–2 Badger win in game one against St. Maries.

 Roberts (3-0) struck out the side in four of the seven innings he pitched.

St. Maries scored in the first inning when senior Mark Grubham scored after being hit by a pitch.   The Badgers tied the game in the second when Roberts scored on a grounder from junior Zach Maas.  

Bonners Ferry scored three more runs in the third when Roberts, Robby Burns and Greg Taggart scored on no hits.  The Badgers added one run in the sixth on Maas’ RBI double and Alex Kellogg scored in the  seventh inning after hitting a single to right center. 

Grubham hit a solo home run in the sixth. 

In game two, a pitching duel between Badger Greg Taggart and Lumberjack Matt Corsi with Corsi and the Jacks prevailing 2-1.  Both pitchers combined for seven hits.

The Lumberjacks scored their two runs in the fourth inning when Stephanson started off with a single and later scored on Corsi’s fielders’ choice.  Corsi later scored after Appel’s fielders’ choice.  The Badgers added a run in the bottom of the fourth when Roberts reached on an error and later scored on an error from the St. Maries shortstop.

Taggart (0-3) threw a complete game, striking out six while walking two batters.  Erickson, Roberts, and Morton each had hits for the Badgers.
