Naples area residents Lisa Dirks and Bill Huston are running for the Boundary County School Board seat held by the late Maria LaBarbera.

Dirks is running in the May 19 election because she wants a great knowledge of what’s happening in the school district.

“I will be a good addition to the school board because of my objective point of view and I realize the importance of our kids’ education as well as a responsibly spent tax dollar,” said the mother of two.

A retired career Air Force veteran, Huston say if elected he will help stabilize a school system that has appeared to have been in disarray and disorganized for a number of years.

Dirks is a lifelong Boundary county resident. The daughter of Gary and Anne Regehr, she graduated from Bonners Ferry High School in 1991 and attended the University of Idaho for 1 1/2 years. Dirks earned a certificate in sales and marketing from Trend College in Spokane, Wash.

She was a teller for Panhandle State Bank and worked for First American Title. Dirks is the secretary for Regehr Logging and co-owns Richardson and Dirks Tree Care in Bonners Ferry and has volunteered for the Bonners Ferry Jr. Miss program for 14 years.

She and her husband, Doug, are the parents of Ivy, 14, and Tucker, 11.

Huston retired from the Air Force after 20 years. During the last nine years, he served as an Air Force instructor, involved in electronic aircraft systems and aircrew training of B-52 Bomber crew members.

Huston received the air metal for numerous combat missions flown over North Korea in 1953. After retiring he earned a degree in political science and graduated from California State Police Academy. Huston worked as a police officer for 18 years, retiring as a patrol sergeant in 1989.

Huston believes that his training and experienced has instilled a background and knowledge that is unique to understand the needs and requirements of students. The need and fulfillment of school guidance and management principles of our students are his foremost interest.

“I will strive to insure that the students of Boundary County will be afford the best opportunity to achieve their maximum potential for a well rounded and beneficial education.”

Voting will take place 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Naples Elementary School. Absentee ballot applications are available at the district office and on the school Web site www.BCSD101.com.
